Law enforcement officials face life threatening situations on a daily basis. On April 19 Panola County Deputy Sheriff Dean Jones went to a McCain Road home for a type of call to which deputies often respond. A woman was trying to collect her belongings from the home of her ex-boyfriend where she had been staying. She called the sheriff’s department from fear of his anger. As the woman and a female friend collected her belongings from the front porch, the ex-boyfriend attacked the woman.
“I heard her scream, ‘No, no, no’ and immediately began running towards the suspect,” Jones stated in his report. The suspect had sneaked out the back door of the residence and grabbed the victim. Jones saw a knife in the suspect’s right hand and just before the suspect brought the knife forward, in an attempt to stab the victim, the deputy tackled the suspect.
After several minutes of fighting with the suspect Jones managed to get the knife away from the suspect and attempted to handcuff him. The suspect continued to resist arrest, forcing the deputy to deliver a one-second burst from his Take Down Extreme pepper spray to the lower part of the man’s face. The suspect fell to the ground and Jones was able to handcuff him, according to the report.
The victim questioned why the suspect would try to stab her. The suspect replied several times that he wanted to kill her. The suspect stated, “If you unhandcuff me I will kill her!” When Jones told the suspect that what he had done was stupid because he could have been forced to kill the suspect, the suspect stated that he wanted Jones to kill him, the report states.
Deputy Jones asked dispatch to send an ambulance to check out the suspect, due to his medical history, before he was transported to the Panola County Sheriff’s Office.
