Domestic violence reports dominate calls

Panola County Sheriff’s Department officers investigated  multiple reports involving violence or threats of violence, according of reports released this week.
 On February 7 Deputy John Still was dispatched to Hawkins Road in Courtland to investigate a report of simple assault. The victim told Still that her husband struck her on the left side of her face; however, there was no physical evidence indicating she had been struck.
The sheriff’s office received 14 more reports of simple assault, including domestic violence between February 21 to March 3.
Further investigation into a Feb. 21 complaint on South Pine Lake Drive where a victim had told Deputy Josh Griffin that someone shot at his home as they drove by and he returned fire brought Deputies Mark Allen and Jeremy Hailey to assist.  When two people were questioned, one admitted having a rifle in the vehicle as well as brass knuckles in his pocket.
Hailey retrieved the rifle from the individual’s black Ford Ranger. A witness told officers that another person was involved who threw a handgun out into the woods on the side of Pine Lake Drive. A search for the handgun was unsuccessful, according to the report.
Other details from reports:
• Assault by a mother on a daughter, Feb. 27, Ballentine Road, investigated by Deputy Darryl House;
• Assault by husband on wife, investigated by Deputy Bill Furniss, Floyd’s Island, Feb. 27. Second assault was also attempted. Suspect kicked in front door of mother-in-law’s home, according to report. Suspect arrested for domestic violence and also held for burglary investigation;
• Furniss investigated another report of domestic violence on Tocowa Road on Feb. 27. Victim stated that ex-boyfriend had come to do some work and that he began threatening her after he noticed someone else had also been helping her and later sent her threatening text messages;
• February 28, House dispatched to Lucious Taylor Road where victim said armed individuals followed her to a store, harassing her and trying to fight;
• House investigated alleged assault on Floyd Road Feb. 28 where victim said an individual attacked her when she didn’t give the suspect her brother’s child.
• Deputy Mark Lott responded to disturbance complain on Lucious Taylor Road Feb. 28 where victim said her boyfriend assaulted her by holding her down, spitting in her face and head-butting her. The victim was bleeding and blood was all over her face and clothes, according to the report. She told Lott that her boyfriend was trying to kill her and that he busted the window out of her vehicle while her child was in the car.
• Deputy Dean Jones was dispatched to Tom Floyd Feb. 28 road to stand by while a victim tried to take custody of her great-granddaughter. She told Jones that while she waited for his arrival a group of people began screaming and cursing at her.  Two people also began hitting her.
She said that her 12-year-old niece tried to stop them and that they began hitting her too. The victim had a small bump above her right eye and scratches to her face and back. Deputy House assisted in the investigation and took witness statements from those involved.
• Jones also investigated a February 27 disturbance where the victim said her father came to her residence and began arguing with her. According to the report the suspect busted the windshield on here white 2002 Chevy truck and assaulted her grandfather.
 • Deputy Griffin took a complaint from an assault victim at the was advised that a subject at the North Oak Emergency Room in Senatobia Feb. 28. Victim told Griffin he was jumped by four individuals following an argument. They struck him in the head with a bottle and then began punching and kicking him. The report states that the complainant had two large knots and an open wood on his forehead.
• Another assault report took Deputy Griffin to Henry Heafner Road  Feb. 28  where the victim said her nephew’s ex-girlfriend was mad after a break up. The suspect and her brother came to her residence and broke out her living room window causing a picture frame to fall off the wall and break. The report also states that the suspect’s brother grabbed the complainant’s nephew by the threat and threatened to beat him up.
• A Greenhill Circle resident told Deputy Lee Martin on Feb. 28 that she was talking to an individual who displayed a silver handgun in his glove compartment. When Martin learned that the individual did not point the gun towards her he told her to the sheriff’s office and pick up a copy of the report to take to Justice Court where she would be asked to sign an affidavit.
• Deputy Martin investigated another disturbance on Eureka Road Feb. 28  where a victim told him that her father requested that she give him $1,200. When she refused him he jumped out of the vehicle and threatened to burn down her home and proceeded to damage vehicles in her driveway. The victim also told Martin that her father is on meth and is capable of carrying out his threats.
Deputy Martin states in his report that he advised the victim to get a copy of the report to take to Justice Court and sign on affidavit on her father.
• Lt. Willie Harris, Willow Road, February 29. Victim said boyfriend jumped on her after he got mad when her son started smacking as he ate. Boyfriend cursed at her son. When she asked him not to speak that way he hit her, leaving a gash on the side of her head. The suspect fled the scene and the victim was transported to the hospital.
• On February 28 victim came to sheriff’s office and told Deputy Furniss that her grandson has been threatening to kill her and burn her house down. He has broken her windows.
•Lt. David Mills, County Village Apartments, March 3. Female victim told Mills she did not need medical attention even though male suspect with whom she had fought struck her face with his fist and then threw her down to hit her head on the concrete.
Threats
•A South Pine Lake Drive, Batesville  resident reporte  an individual who was expressing to others that he was going to cause bodily harm and burn down a family home due to a previous incident which ended in his and another individual’s arrest, according to Feb. 25 report.
• Deputy Roger Salter, Feb. 22 investigated alleged domestic violence after  a Ruby Road, Courtland victim reported that she was receiving harassing and threatening phone calls. Suspect had previously assaulted the victim.
• Deputy George Renfroe, Feb. 29,  victim on Otto Sanford Road, Courtland said an individual was calling her using vulgar language requesting her to do sexual acts;
• Deputy Britton Crawford on March 1 received a arassment complaint against three people who confronted victim Jan. 31 on Abram Road. Victim fled the scene to avoid an altercation, according to the report.
• Deputy Crawford investigated another case of threats on Nash Road March 1. Victim said her son informed her that an individual threatened to “shoot up” their home if his brother didn’t give him money.
• Quitman County Sheriff’s Department contacted Panola authorities March 3 about a report of someone in a black Mazda was driving East on Hwy 6 with a pistol threatening to commit suicide. Investigator Bryan Arnold’s report states that the individual was stopped on Hwy. 6 West in Batesville without incident and that no weapon was found in the vehicle. According to the report, the suspect denied that she was going to commit suicide and left the scene with her sister.
Theft
• On February 28 Deputy Lott investigated a report of someone shoplifting from Dollar General in Pope. The manager told Lott that an individual walked up to the counter with two beers and was told that they could note sell beer until after 12 noon and that the store doesn’t sale the beers individually.
The suspect left with the beers. The manager followed him to get the beer back, but he only handed over one.
• Lieutenant Kelvin Taylor, Old Panola Road, Feb. 29, investigated  breaking and entering. Victim said she had returned home to find that someone broke into her home through the bedroom window by taking out the air conditioner.
The said that a 55-inch and 46-inch  flat screen televiciosn, two RCA tablets, a Verizon hotspot, lock box, needles, Porter Cable tool set and an orange bag with checks in it had been taken.
• On February 29 Lieutenant Harris was dispatched to Springport Road to investigate stolen medication. Victim said she let a family member stay with her and a few days after getting her medication. She soon discovered only three of her 70 one mg. Ativans remained.
• A Cold Springs Road resident reported to Deputy Danny Beavers March 1 that her gray 2011 Chevy Malibu’s license tag was missing when she retrieved the vehicle from Galmore’s in Sardis after repairs. The owner of the shop could not locate it.
• Deputy Beavers took another report March 2 from a Banger Road, Sarah resident whose tag had been lost or stolen from her motorcycle.
• On March 3 a Curtis-Locke Station Road, Batesville, resident told Deputy Lott that her debit card had been stolen and $200 had been taken out of her account without her permission. She provided the deputy with the name of a suspect.
Other reports made to the Panola County Sheriff’s Department and dated from February 19 to March 4 include:
• Trespassing on Central Academy Road, Batesville, Feb. 19 was investigated by Deputy Hailey who stopped an SUV that was attempting to leave the scene. Hailey detained the driver who later admitted that the five rifles found in the SUV belonged to him, a convicted felon.
•Trespassing, on Forrest Drive South, South, Sardis, Feb. 27. Victim told Deputy House trespasser had entered property in spite of previous warning;
• Firearm lost, Feb. 27. Victim told Deputy Hailey that he placed 9mm Ruger handgun on roof of vehicle and drove off from his Graham Road, Sardis residence. “His handgun must have fallen off his vehicle while he was driving,” Hailey’s report states.
• Also on Feb. 27 Deputy Lott was dispatched to Hwy 315 E., Sardis where the the caller said his neighbor was burning something that was putting of a smell of rubber. As Lott arrived at the neighbor’s house, the firemen were extinguishing the blaze. The neighbor told Lott he was only burning trash. “There was no sign of burning tires at that point,” Lott’s report states.
• On February 29 Investigator Arnold was contacted by an informant that stated a 17-year-old was living with her father on Dogwood Circle where the father was cooking meth as well as forcing or allowing the juvenile to do the drug. The investigation has been passed along to the Panola County Narcotic Investigators as well as Department of Human Services.
• A man told Deputy Beavers that he let a woman and her two children move into his residence on Vassar Road, Pope. They “started fussing and not getting along,” the report states. The deputy told them man he needed to go to Justice Court and start an eviction procedure.
• On March 2 Deputy Lewis arrested an individual on Warren Street, Como, on a signed warrant. According to the report the individual was asked to empty his pockets and as the jailor was counting his money, he found marijuana wrapped up in a five dollar bill.
• Investigator Terry Smith was called to Dewberry Street Apartments, Sardis where the owner of a red Camaro convertible reported that her car had been set on fire March 4.
The named another female with whom she had ongoing problems over a male companion.
Motor Vehicle Accidents
The sheriff’s office received five vehicle accident reports from February 25 to March 3, all involving one vehicle. One car struck a deer on Pumping Station Road, one vehicle overturned on Hentz Road resulting in an injury, and three other vehicle collisions involving one car, which resulted in two injuries out of all three accidents.
Juveniles
Two juveniles, both 15, from North Panola High landed themselves in hot water for fighting, while another student, 17 years old, got in trouble for disorderly conduct and a 13-year-old Batesville Middle School student got into trouble for making threats.
