Johnny J. Fewell Jr.
SARDIS––Johnny J. Fewell Jr., 75, died Saturday, October 3, 2015 at Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Mississippi.

Services were held Wednesday at Hebron Baptist Church near Sardis. Interment followed in the church cemetery. The Reverend Terry Tribble officiated. Wells Funeral Home had charge.
Fewell, born October 21, 1939 in Tunica, to the late Johnny J. Fewell Sr. and Margaret Campbell Fewell, was a member of Hebron Baptist Church and retired after 35 years as a derrick engineer for Illinois Central Railroad. Following his retirement, he worked for six years as a camper mover for Hoosier in Indiana, and then for two years as a pallet driver for Batesville Pallet.

He is U.S. Army veteran and served from 1957 to 1962. He married his wife, Ruth, on January 13, 1962 in Germany.

Survivors, in addition to his wife of 53 years, include: two sons, Ronny W. Fewell of Sardis and Andy L. Fewell of Byhalia; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Inez Kittrell
BATESVILLE–– Inez Kittrell, 69, a retired secretary at Yazoo Planters Gin Company, died October 6, 2015 at Walter B. Crook Nursing Home in Ruleville.

Services will be held today at 11 a.m. at Meredith -Nowell Funeral Home in Clarksdale.
Visitation will be held today from 10:00 – 11:00 A.M. at the funeral home. Interment will follow at the Oakridge Cemetery. Meredith-Nowell Funeral Home in Clarksdale has charge.
Mrs. Kittrell, born to the late H.C. and Offie Lee Rogers Funderburk, was a member of First Faith Baptist Church of Batesville.

Survivors include: her husband of 50 years Wayne Kittrell; son, Robert Kittrell of Cleveland; daughter Robben Kittrell Roberts of Skene; sisters, Eva Caples of Lyon, Cleta Harris of Niceville, Fla., Betty Brooks of Crestview, Fla. and Linda Waldrup of Ruleville; brothers Clem Funderburk of Memphis, Delbert Funderburk and Doyle Wayne Funderburk of Bobo; and two grandchildren.

Bennie Mason
SARDIS––Bennie Mason, 75, died Sunday, October 4, 2015 at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Memphis. He was the husband of Johnie Keen Mason of Sardis for 51 years.

Memorial services were held Thursday at Black Jack Presbyterian Church. Dr. Don Howie and Dr. Douglass Sullivan-Gonzalez officiated. Wells Funeral Home had charge.

Mason, born July 22, 1940 to the late Richard Lawrence Mason Sr. and Georgia Wilson Mason in Panola County, was a farmer and a member of Black Jack Presbyterian Church, where he served as a deacon, elder, and treasurer, as well as helping with the youth for many years.
He was a U.S. Air Force as veteran where he was a mechanic.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include: two children, Sonya Mason Edwards of Pascagoula, Karen Mason Kitchens of Corpus Christi, Texas; two brothers, John Thomas Mason of Batesville and Ralph Mason of Sardis.

Mary Catherine Montgomery
COMO––Mary Catherine Montgomery, 70, died Wednesday, September 30, 2015.

Services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Cistern Hill Baptist Church in Como. Visitation will be held Friday from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Rodgers Funeral Home, who has charge of arrangements and from 10 a.m. until service time at the church.  Burial will be held in Cistern Hill church Cemetery. 

Montgomery was a member of Cistern Hill Baptist Church and was employed as a butcher.
Survivors include: two daughters, Takeeler McGhee of Memphis and Paula Montgomery of Como; four sons, Julius Montgomery of Como, Bernard Montgomery of Memphis, Ronnie Montgomery of Horn Lake and Meshere Montgomery of Senatobia; six sisters, Marie Ward, Loretta Findley, Beverly Findley and Earnestine Carter, all of Como, Ida Nichols of Louisville and Shirley Garrett of Olive Branch; two brothers, Rufus Findley of Memphis and John Findley of Como; 11 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Paul Weldon Sherwood
HARMONTOWN––Paul Weldon Sherwood, 81, died Sunday, October 4, 2015 at Baptist Memorial Hospital – North Mississippi.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Harmontown Baptist Church in Como. Ray Nowell Funeral Home of Sardis has charge of arrangements.

 He was of the Baptist faith and loved to fish, work in his yard and build birdhouses.
Survivors include: his wife Patsy Copeland Sherwood of Harmontown;  one daughter Helen Rose Sherwood of Kingfisher, Okla.; two step-daughters, Connie Griggs Brown of North Carolina; and Candy K. Griggs of Como; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren.

Dorothy Harris
COURTLAND–Dorothy Mae Webster Harris, 74, died at her residence on October 3, 2015.
Funeral services will be Saturday at 2:30 p.m. at Spring Hill Asa M.B. Church in Courtland. Pastor Louis Wilson Sr. will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be today from 10-6 at Cooley’s Mortuary.

Born December 11, 1940 in Batesville to Glen Webster and Julia Ann Dunlap Webster, she was retired from the Sinai Samaritan Medical Center in Milwaukee.

Mrs. Harris was a member of Spring Hill Asa Church and belonged to the Mission Society.
She is survived by her husband, James Haywood Harris, of Milwaukee; three sons, James Haywood Harris Jr., Tony Lee Harris and Reginald Harris, all of Milwaukee; four daughters, Stacy Harris, Christine Harris, Dorothy Martin, all of Milwaukee, and Diane Harris of Courtland; four brothers, Frank Webster, Fred Webster, James Webster and Robert Lee Webster, all of Courtland; two sisters, Shirley Griffin of Courtland and Clara Mae Webster of Sardis; 15 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

Eloise Jenkins
ALLIGATOR–Eloise Howell Jenkins, 82, died October 4, 2015 in Alligator.  Services were October 7 at Oakhurst Baptist Church in Clarksdale. Interment followed at Memorial Gardens Cemetery. National Funeral Home had charge of arrangements.

The daughter of the late Ernest and Mildred Howell, Mrs. Jenkins was  a member of Oakhurst Baptist Church and was retired from Alligator Water Department. She had worked for Plantation Inn and Uptowners of Clarksdale  and Vision Care. 

She was the widow of Dennis Jenkins Sr.

Mrs. Jenkins is survived by her daughter, Ollie Katherine Denise Jenkins Hallmon of Nesbit and two sons, Dennis M. Jenkins, Jr. and John Timothy Jenkins of Alligator. Other survivors  include sisters, Linda Wilkes of Courtland, and Elizabeth Mabry of Batesville, and her brother, Arthur C. Howell of Alligator and nine grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.

Charles Sledge
BATESVILLE–Charles Sledge, 68, died Tuesday, October 6, 2015 at Methodist University Hospital.

Funeral services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Mt. Gillion M.B. Church, with pastors L.C. Smith and Ethel Scurlock officiating. Burial will be in New Hope Cemetery.

Visitation will be today from 10-6 at Cooley’s Mortuary.

Mr. Sledge, born April 19, 1947 to Lula Mae Avant Sledge, he was self employed and served in the U.S. Army. He was a member of New Hope M.B. Church.

Survivors include his wife, Effie Sledge of Batesville; two sons, Dariel Sledge of Memphis and Gerald Sledge of Batesville; two daughters, Kimberly Clay of Nashville and Sabrina Grimes of Batesville; his sister, Rose Williams of Courtland; 13 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Chester L. Smith
BATESVILLE–Chester L. Smith, 58, died October 4, 2015 at the Tri-Lakes Behavioral Center.
Funeral services will be held Saturday at Mt. Olive M.B. Church at 1 p.m.

The Rev. C.J. Battle will officiate. Visitation will be held beginning at noon. Eddie Robinson Funeral Home has charge.

The son of the late Chester Carpenter and Pearlie M. Hardrick, he was an Army veteran and a truck driver.

Survivors include: his wife, JoAnn Coward Smith of Atlanta; one daughter Chestine Smith of Batesville; three sons, Chester Smith Jr., Jeramie Smith of Atlanta and Jermaine Smith of Buffalo, N.Y.; brothers Leroy Hardrick and Clarence Hardrick of Batesville, Jonah Hardrick of Jacksonville, Fla., Charles Bristol Carpenter, Darron Carpenter and Terry Carpenter of Nashville; sisters JoAnn Hardrick, Ora Lee Hardrick, Weida Mae Hardrick, all of Batesville; Mildred McMurry and Deloris Hardrick of Courtland, Alesia Carpenter and Bushonna Early of Nashville; one grandchild.
