The contest for Second Court District Constable became a three-way race this week as Albert Perkins and Earl Burdette qualified to seek the post held by incumbent Ray Hawkins, who is seeking re-election.
Burdette, who is Como police chief, qualified as an independent.
Perkins, an investigator with the Panola County Sheriff’s Department, qualified to run as a Democrat.
On Wednesday, Chancery Clerk Jim Pitcock qualified to seek re-election, running as an independent candidate.
Perkins and Hawkins will face each other in the August 4 Democrat Primary Election. The winner of the August 4 election will face Burdette in the November 3 General Election.
The only remaining county offices officially contested are the supervisors’ posts in Districts Two and Four, but this week Boyce Crowell said that he intends to seek the District Three supervisor’s seat now held by incumbent John Thomas. Thomas qualified during the second week in January to seek re-election.
The qualifying deadline is 5 p.m. Friday, February 27.
