Residents in three Batesville neighborhoods reported door-to-door salesmen soliciting magazine subscriptions in what turned out to be a scam, Batesville Police Deputy Chief Don Province said Monday.

Calls came in to the Batesville Police Department Sunday afternoon from residents of Westmoreland Circle, Country Club Road and Trianon Street after homeowners were approached by persons selling magazine subscriptions in a “fundraiser for St. Jude.”

Police quickly confirmed that the world-renowned children’s hospital in Memphis does not conduct magazine sales to raise funds.

The four out-of-town “salesmen,” three men and a woman, were located by police and found not to have permits required by the city for solicitation.

“We told them to leave town and they did,” Province said.

Anyone who wrote a check and gave it to the scammers should stop payment on it, Province said.
