ND wins remain elusive

By Brad Greer
Just when things could not get any worse for North Delta this baseball season, Indianola seems to add to those troubles as the teams met in a District 1-AA doubleheader Thursday at Green Wave Field.

Mired in an 11-game losing streak, the Green Wave saw a 12-7 fifth-inning lead fall by the wayside as the Colonels scored ten runs in the final two innings to come away with a wild 17-15 victory. The second game was halted in the third inning due to rain with North Delta holding a 2-1 lead. No makeup date has been announced.

North Delta (5-13; 1-7) held a 15-12 lead with one out in the top of the seventh before disaster struck as eight straight Indianola batters reached base. Hunter Vance started the rally by reaching on an error. Jackson Pitts then walked before Jacob Smith blasted a double to right center to score both runners.

Michael Sykes followed with a sharp single to left that plated Smith to tie the game at 15. Wheeler Timbs was then hit by a pitch to put runners on the corners. After a wild pitch sent Timbs to second, Jar Parker reached on an infield error to score the go ahead run. Parker then went to the mound and held North Delta scoreless to pick up the win in relief.

North Delta tallied three runs in the bottom of the sixth to regain a 15-12 advantage after Indianola scored five times in the top half of the inning. Chase Coker got things started with a one-out single then scored on an Ethan Calvert double. Skylar Lawson singled then went to third on an error by the left fielder. Hunter Baker drove in his fourth run of the game with a sacrifice fly to center that plated Lawson.

The Green Wave collected 13 hits in the game as Coker had a huge game at the plate with four singles and two RBI’s. Baker followed with three singles. Nathan Herron and Ridge Simmerman added two singles each. Andy Linder scored two runs in a pinch- running role.

North Delta took a 1-0 lead in the first as Coker reached on a bunt single before stealing second and scoring on a throwing error. Indianola answered with  two unearned runs in the second before the Wave tied the game at 2-2 when Jones Montgomery scored on a wild pitch
Indianola retook the lead with four runs in the third before North Delta cut the lead in half at 6-3 on Baker’s RBI single that plated Linder. The Green Wave then proceeded to bat around in the fourth and fifth innings which produce nine runs.

The Colonels left 13 runners on base and committed six errors while North Delta stranded 11 runners on base and booted the ball five times.

North Delta returns to the diamond today at 4 & 6 p.m. as they host Winona before traveling to Winona Thursday for a 4 p.m. doubleheader.
