The Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) has placed additional warning signals at the newly activated traffic lights on Highway 6 at I-55.

The extra warning signals came after wrecks at the location on Tuesday and Wednesday and prior to Saturday’s football game in Oxford when large numbers of fans were expected to approach from the north via I-55 and from the west on Hwy. 6/278.

“So far it’s our local drivers,” Batesville Deputy Police Chief Don Province said.

Last Wednesday, two Courtland residents were injured when their westbound Mustang passed under an 18-wheeler that had exited I-55 and was turning east on Highway 6, Province said.
“It cut off the top of the car,” the deputy chief said, apparently spawning a rumor that the driver had been decapitated.

The driver, Letreyvius L. Bradford, and his passenger, Amber L. Lee, both of Courtland, were transported by ambulance to Baptist Memorial Hospital in Oxford, Province said.
 
Further information about their injuries was not available. Province said they were both conscious at the scene.

The truck’s driver, William E. Evans of Calhoun City, was uninjured.

Province said that the new signals and elimination of looped exit lanes have improved traffic flow at the intersection.
