OBITUARIES – 8/9/2013

SARDIS – Faye Earby Black, 68, died Friday, August 2, 2013 at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Memphis.

The family will hold a private memorial service at a later time.

Mrs. Black was born to the late Jesse Crafton and the late Frances Crafton on May 24, 1945 in Lambert. She worked as a nurse in the healthcare industry.

Survivors include: her husband, Carrel Black of Sardis; two sons, Gerald Earby and Shannon Earby, both of Sardis; two sisters, Mildred Parker of Sardis and Judy Williamson of Batesville; one brother, Wesley Crafton of Louisiana; and four grandchildren.

MARKS –  Bryant “Hubert” Cobb Jr., 75, died Monday, August 5, 2013, at the Quitman County Nursing Facility in Marks.

Memorial services were held Wednesday, August 7, at New Hope Church of God. Rev. Raymond Aven officiated. Wells Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Cobb was born in Lambert, to the late Vara Huddleston and the late Bryant Hubert Cobb Sr., on March 18, 1938. He was a farmer and also a minister of the gospel.
He was a member of the New Hope Church of God in Batesville. 

Survivors include his wife of 48 years, Linda Patterson Cobb of Lambert; one daughter, Lisa Cobb Johnson of Lambert; one sister, Ginger Harrison of Lambert; one brother, Mike Cobb of Lambert and two grandsons.

In lieu of flowers the family asks that memorials be sent to the Alzeheimer’s Association, P.O. Box 96011, Washington, DC 20090-6011 or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, Tenn. 38105.

SENATOBIA — Henry Ruth Bradley Cook, 94, died Tuesday, July 30, 2013 at her residence.
Funeral services were held Friday, August 2, at Lifepoint Church in Senatobia. Burial was in Longtown Cemetery near Crenshaw. Ray-Nowell Funeral Home – Senatobia Chapel had charge of arrangements.

Cook was a member of Hollywood Baptist Church in Sledge.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Jessie Alba Cook, two sisters, one brother and her parents, Henry Bradley and Lizzie Mae Monley Bradley.

Survivors include: nine daughters, Ollie Coleman (Bob) of Kilmichael, Peggy Shull (Tommy) of Southaven, Mildred Hamilton (Brewer) of Pontotoc, Evelyn Pladey (Tom) of West Milford, N. J., Lucille Schriver of LaGrange, Ga., Brenda Dover (Oliver) of Ecru, Carol Tierce (George) of Cummings, Ga., Sandra Mayo (Don) of Crenshaw and Ann Spires (Bobby) of England, Ark.; five sons, John Cook (Lola) of Longtown, James Earl Cook (Susie) of Crenshaw, James Albert Cook (Diane), Charles Cook (Bobbie),  Donnie Cook (Sandra), all of Senatobia; two sisters, Dora Crawford and Martha Davis; 28 grandchildren, 42 great-grandchildren and eight great-great grandchildren. 

BATESVILLE — Willie Lloyd Hamilton, 58, died Monday, August 5, 2013.

Services will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. at Mt. Pleasant Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Eddie Robinson Funeral Home has charge.

Hamilton, born April 6, 1955, to the late Strothes Hamilton and Annie L. Hamilton, was a truck driver.

BATESVILLE – Nancy Lee Harris Holmes died Wednesday, August 7, 2013 at her residence.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, August 10 at Dickins Funeral Home with visitation beginning at 1:30 p.m. prior to the service.

BATESVILLE — Roy “Kelly” Jaco, 40, died Tuesday, August 6, 2013, in his sister’s home, near Batesville.

Services were held Thursday at Wells Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Eric Payne officiating. Burial was in Forrest Memorial Park Cemetery.  Wells Funeral Home had charge of arrangements.

Jaco was born to Bobby Gene  and Edwena Patricia Whitman Jaco on April 26, 1973 in Sardis. He was a construction worker and a member of the former Rose Hill Baptist Church.

Survivors include a daughter, Kally Jaco of Batesville; two sons, Austin and Justin Jaco, both of Batesville; six sisters, Diane Wiginton of Jackson, Tenn., Arlene Robertson, Roena Robertson, both of Batesville, Carlene Jaco of Sarah, Lila Darby of Colorado Springs, Colo. and Wanda Shields of Courtland; three brothers, Terry Jaco of Independence, Allen Jaco and David Jaco, both of Batesville.

ZION, Ill. — Jacqueline D. Leonard, 34, died Monday, August 5, 2013, in Zion. She was the sister of Tammie Vaughn and Shelton Leonard Jr., both of Batesville.

Services will be held Saturday at noon at Trinity United Methodist Church. Rev. Michael Jossell Sr. will officiate. Burial will be in Lambert Cemetery. Delta Burial has charge.

Leonard, born Oct. 15, 1978, in Mound Bayou to Shelton Leonard Sr. of Marks and Dorothy Tillman of Zion, was a member of First Corinthian M.B. Church in North Chicago, Ill. She graduated from Vista East in Waukegan, Ill. and College of Lake County in Grayslake, Ill.

She was preceded in death by her son, Eric Hubbard Jr.

Survivors, in addition to her parents and siblings, include: one daughter, Jasmine Anna of Zion; one son, Giorantia Leonard of Zion; three sisters, Arletha Cunningham and Twyla Leonard, both of Marks and Jennie Glover of Zion and her god sister, Latanya Norwood of Batesville; and stepfather Alfred Tillman of Zion.

ROBINSONVILLE – Lanelle Young O’Briant, mother of Lee Gentry of Pope, died Friday, August 2, 2013.  

Memorial services will be held Saturday, August 10 at 11 a.m. at Batesville Presbyterian Church with visitation and fellowship to follow.

She was born April 13, 1950 to the late Robert Lee Young and Alice Griggs Young McCaskill.

Mrs. O’Briant was preceded in death by her husband of 25 years, Danny O’Briant, who died April 5, of this year after a short bout with cancer.

O’Briant was employed as bank teller at First Security Bank in Robinsonville. She was Baptist and enjoyed gardening, sports including softball.  She attended Mississippi?Delta Community College where she was a cheerleader.

In addition to her daughter, she is survived by one son John Barrett  of Hernando and daughter, Brandi White of Southaven, two stepsons Kirk O’Briant of Helena and Patrick O’Briant of Southaven; and 12 grandchildren.

GULFPORT — Lillia Bernnice Scoggins Reynolds, 85, died Sunday, August 4, 2013, at her residence.

Graveside services were held Thursday at Batesville Magnolia Cemetery. Tommy Darby officiated. Dickins Funeral Home had charge.

Reynolds, born Feb. 8, 1978, in Tate County, to the late A.G. Scoggins and Lillie Nelson Scoggins, was an accountant in Gulfport.

Survivors include: her sister, Florine Pitcock of Enid.

TULSA, Okla. — Annie C. Thomas Smith, 87, died Sunday, August 4, 2013.

Services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Concord Church in Batesville. Rev. Walter Smith will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be held today from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Cooley’s Mortuary, who has charge of arrangements.

Smith was born Oct. 7. 1925, to the late Stanley Thomas and Minnie L. Griffin.

Survivors include: four sons, Walter Smith amd Craig Smith, both of Tulsa, Davey Smith of Abliene, Texas and Larry Smith of Laverkin, Utah; two daughters, Dianne Smith and Sharon Hunter, both of Tulsa; one brother, Stanley Thomas of Batesville; three sisters, Wilkie Hentz and Irma L. Martin, both of Batesville and Lula Bell Child of Warren, Okla. and a host of grandchildren.

OXFORD–Lynda Taylor Smith, 41, died Saturday, August 3, 2013 at Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Mississippi. She was the daughter of the late Larry Smith of Florence, Ala., formerly of Batesville, and Russell and Kathy Lamb of Booneville.

Born in Brewton, Ala., she became the foster daughter of Larry and Kathy Smith (Lamb) on January 22, 1974 and was legally adopted three years later. She had lived in Batesville for a brief time where her father was minister of music at the Batesville Presbyterian Church, but the majority of her life was spent in Oxford.

Lynda became a resident of the North Mississippi Regional Center on May 29, 1992 when she was no longer eligible for public school services.  Funeral services were held Wednesday, August 7 in the Coleman Funeral Home Chapel in Oxford with Dr. Gary Richardson officiating. Interment was in the Booneville City Cemetery.

In addition to her parents, she is survived by: three brothers, Kevin Smith of Olive Branch, Kristopher Smith of Denver; Kelly Lamb of Tupelo; one sister, Kristen Shepherd of Lake Charles, La.; and her grandmother, Opal Anderson of Booneville.

Memorials may be made to the Lynda Smith Memorial Fund at 1st National Bank in Oxford, to be used for projects at the Scott Child Development Center and other programs benefiting children with special needs.
