A preliminary hearing  in Batesville City Court was continued until next Wednesday for the defendant in a July 4 murder.

Judge Jay Westfaul continued the case of Desmond Robinson, 21-A Lamar Thomas, Batesville, who is charged with killing Douglas Ellis, who was found shot to death early on the morning of July 4 on Martin Luther King Drive in Batesville.

In other matters, the judge denied a bond reduction for Suvannah Guzman, HC 69 Box 298, Terrel, Okla., charged with accessory after the fact-grand larceny. He kept her bond of $25,000 after determining the defendant might be a flight risk. Her case was bound over to the grand jury.
Christopher Joiner, 242 Joiner Rd., Courtland, was referred to the grand jury for armed robbery.
Jeffery Wright, 523 Pope-Water-Valley Road, Pope, entered a guilty plea to saggy pants ordinance. He was fined $50.

Christopher Hurst, 356 Eureka St., Batesville, entered a guilty plea to open container. He was fined $312.

Christopher Brown Jr., 8 Greg Taylor, Courtland, entered a guilty plea to possession of marijuana by a minor. He was fined $333.

Randy Brassell, 9718 Hwy. 51 South, Courtland, entered a guilty plea to simple possession of marijuana and open container. He was fined $740.

Dedric Sanford, 69 Otto Sanford Rd., Courtland, failed to appear to answer charges for possession of marijuana in a vehicle and improper equipment.

Justin Carothers, 107 MLK 3-E, Batesville, entered a guilty plea to simple possession of marijuana. He was fined $428.

Melvin Vaughn, 120 Field St., Batesville, entered a not guilty plea to possession of marijuana in a vehicle and improper equipment. He also had old fines of $463 that have been due since April 2013. He was sentenced to 30 days in jail. The judge told him he could be released when he paid his fines in full.

Willie B. Ellis Jr., 109 Everette, Batesville, entered a guilty plea to public drunk. He was fined $210.

Kedrick Sanford, 93 Greg Taylor Rd., Courtland, had a charge for domestic violence-simple assault dismissed due to lack of prosecution. The affiant Cashadon Griffin failed to appear. Sanford entered a not guilty plea to possession of marijuana in vehicle and no tag. A trial was set.

Brandy Perkins, 19130 Hwy. 51 South, Sardis, entered a guilty plea to shoplifting from Wal-Mart. She was also sentenced to six months in jail for old fines of $1,352 that have been due since July 2007.

“You can be released once the fines are paid in full,” said Westfaul.

Lorenzo Honeycutt, 122 Cousen St., Marks, had David Walker appointed to represent him on charges of felony possession of controlled substance, DUI-second (other) and loud music. His bond was $5,000.

Bianca Broadnax, 4063-C Barnacre Rd., Batesville, had a case for petit larceny dismissed after the affiant, Bobby Bradford failed to appear to prosecute.

The affiant was charged and fined $50 for filing charges and failing to appear in court to prosecute.

Alisha A. Rogers, 625 Wagner St., Water Valley, was fined $416 for no seat belt and driving while license suspended.

Christopher Scott Jr., 116 Williams St., Batesville, was fined $35 for no seat belt. He had a no proof of insurance charge dismissed after he provided proof of insurance.

Earnest M. Towns Jr., 107 MLK Dr. Apt. 5, Batesville, was fined $416 for no seat belt and driving while license suspended.

Travious M. Conner, 901 Church St., Isola, was fined $461 for no driver’s license and improper equipment.
