North Delta must have known it would be in for a long day Thursday when shortstop Chase Coker took a glancing shot off the nose during pre-game infield drills.
As it turned out, that might have been the hardest hit of the day as the Green Wave was held to one infield single in a 13-0 loss to Bayou Academy. The game was halted after four innings due to the 12-run mercy rule.
Will Magee’s infield single in the second inning was all the Green Wave could muster off Bayou starting pitcher Michael Pinter.
North Delta (0-2) had one player reach scoring position in the game as William Dean advanced to third on a pair errors in the third inning.
After a scoreless first inning, Bayou struck for four runs on four hits off Wave starting pitcher Carter Gant. Weber Herbison’s two-run single followed by Trevon Runnels RBI single were key hits in the inning.
The Colts added four more runs in the third to increase their lead to 8-0 as Davis Dalton and Runnels provided run-scoring singles to key the inning.
Bayou (2-0) put the game away in the following inning with five runs on one hit and three walks.
Gant took the loss on the mound for North Delta as the senior right-hander gave up four runs on four hits while striking out two and walking one batter in two innings.
Skylar Lawson pitched two innings of relief, surrendering seven runs on four hits while walking four and fanning one batter. Dean finished the game by tossing one inning.
North Delta returns to the diamond today as they travel to Tupelo Christian for a single varsity contest beginning at 3:30 p.m.
