Ward to participate in Liberty Bowl with queens

By Myra Bean

North Panola Homecoming queen Daryleshia Ward has been invited to participate in the 54th Annual AutoZone Liberty Bowl Football Classic in Memphis Monday, December 31.

Ward was chosen through America’s Homecoming Queens National Pageant Registry “as an elite individual” to participate in this year’s bowl game and bowl week events, according to organizer Pam Kimery’s letter.

A small percentage of queens are chosen and invited to Memphis.

“You are one of the top queens in your state and region of the country. Our selection is based on your academic achievements, your community activities and your all-around status as an outstanding individual,” Kimery’s letter said.

In addition to being named homecoming queen at North Panola, Ward is a member of the cheerleading squad and the basketball team.

The queens are not competing in a pageant or competition and will not affect those who may be involved in state competitions, according to the letter.

“This is merely for fun, excitement and the recognition of your outstanding achievements,” said Kimery.

“The AutoZone Liberty Bowl is the 7th oldest Bowl game in America and was founded on the principles of freedom, patriotism and liberty. The Queens represent the white in our red, white and blue patriotic theme.”

Each queen will be required to wear white at the game and will be involved in the pre-game and halftime festivities.

During the bowl week, the queens will tour St. Jude Research Hospital and take part in a Queens Luncheon at the hospital, then participate in the Liberty Bowl Parade on Sunday, December 30.

The game will be televised on ESPN at 2:30 CST.
