BATESVILLE — Blandenia Burgess, 97, died Thursday, May 31, 2012, at her residence.

Services will be held Wednesday at 1 p.m. at Second Concord M.B. Church. Pastor Joseph Wilson will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be held Tuesday from 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. at Cooley’s Mortuary and from noon – 1 p.m. on Wednesday at Second Concord M.B. Church. Cooley’s Mortuary has charge.

Burgess, born Dec. 23, 1915, in Brazil to Spencer Brown and Eliza Brown, was a retired factory worker and a member of Second Concord M.B. Church.

Survivors include: two daughters, Bobbie Austin and Josephine Burgess, both of Batesville; one son, Clarence Burgess of Chicago; one sister, Murlene Bowman of Houston, Texas; two brothers, Roosevelt Brown and Lieutenant Buford, both of Chicago; 28 grandchildren; 41 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren.

GREENWOOD –  John Melvin Farrish Sr., 87, died Thursday, May 28, 2012, at the State Veterans Home in Oxford. He was the father of John Melvin Farrish Jr. of Batesville.

Services were held Thursday at Wilson and Knight Funeral Home in Greenwood.  Wilson and Knight Funeral Home had charge.

Farrish, born in Carroll County, to John Hubert and Mary T. Farrish, attended Greenwood High School and was inducted to the U.S. Army in 1943 where he served in the Philippine Islands. He was in the road construction business and operated it until his retirement in 2004. While operating this business, the Mississippi Asphalt Association elected him as president. He was also president of the Farrish Gravel Company of Greenwood and Batesville. He was a member of the Greenwood and Batesville Chamber of commerce, Mississippi Road Builders Association, National Asphalt Pavement Association and American Road Builders Association.

He was a member of the first Christian Church where he served on the board of deacons.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Carroll Farrish and one grandson, David Naugher.

Survivors along with his son include: his wife of 67 years, Mary Lindsey Farrish; two daughters, Linda Farrish Naugher of North Little Rock, Judy Farrish Johnson of Greenwood; son, David Nelson Farrish of Ridgeland; one brother, Johnny Farrish of Greenwood; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

WATER VALLEY – Bessie Lou Dunn Goodwin, 61, died Thursday, May 30, 2012, at her residence.
Graveside services were Monday at Mt. Liberty Baptist Church Cemetery in Calhoun County. Bro. Jerry Burk officiated. Seven Oaks Funeral Home had charge.

She was born December 1, 1950 to the late Ben and Leola Davis Dunn in Michigan. She was a homemaker and a member of Victory Baptist Church.

Survivors include: one son, Anthony Boxx of Water Valley; one daughter, Lisa McIver of Pensacola, Fla.; one son, Mark Goodwin of Batesville; three sisters, Katherine Camp and Frances Burk, both of Water Valley and Mary Pirson of Houston; two brothers, Wayne Dunn of Lafayette and Ed Dunn of Jasper, Ark. and four grandchildren.

BATESVILLE –  Mary Frances Darby Irvin, 77, died Sunday, May 20, 2012 at her residence.

Services were held Wednesday, May 23, at Wells Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in Magnolia Cemetery. Wells Funeral Home had charge.

Irvin, born March 16, 1935, in Lancaster, Ky., to the late Clarence Naylor and Jean Thompson Naylor, was a retired deli manager for Larson’s Big Star. She was a member of Victory Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husbands, Louie “Bo” Darby and Shelby Irvin.

Survivors include: one son, Russ Darby of Batesville; four sisters, Mary Naylor Merchant of Danville, Ken., Florence Naylor McCane and Lula Naylor Montgomery, both of Lancaster, Ken., Wilma Naylor Wagner of Seattle, Wash.; and three grandchildren.

BATESVILLE – Mary McGregory Jenkins, 81, died Wednesday, May 30, 2012, at her residence.

Services were held Saturday at Wells Funeral Home Chapel. Reverend Rayford Ables and Dr. Tommy Snyder officiated. Burial was in Forrest Memorial Park Cemetery.

Jenkins, born November 6, 1930, in Calhoun City, to the late Dewey Wayne and Clady Modess Cannon McGregory, was a homemaker and member of First Baptist Church in Batesville where she was a member of the JOY Club. She was also a member of the Friendship Quilters. She made quilts for the Honduran people, of Central America, as part of the Honduras Missions Outreach.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Curtis Jenkins.

Her survivors include: three sons, Ralph Jenkins of Scottsdale, Ariz., Milton Jenkins of Shorewood, Ill., and Tony Jenkins of Calhoun, Ga.; six sisters, Dorothy “Dot” Stutson of Byhalia,  Sarah Perkins of Memphis, Shirley Jenkins of Crenshaw,  Linda Humphrey of Houlka, Patsy Edwards of Beebe, Ark. and Peggy Bowie of Atoka, Tenn.; three brothers, Wayne McGregory of Sterling, Ill., James McGregory of Batesville and Eddie McGregory of Palestine, Ark.; seven grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

BATESVILLE –  Robert Victor Perkins, 87, died May 29, 2012, at Tri-Lakes Medical Center.

Services were Friday at Kimbro Funeral Home. Rev. Lister Bowdoin officiated. Burial followed in Marks Cemetery. Kimbro Funeral Home had charge of arrangements.

Perkins, born April 18, 1925, in Marks, was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and a member of Marks United Methodist Church.

Survivors include: one daughter, Nancy Hamilton of Santa Barbara, Calif.; one sister, Evelyn Crothers of Natchez and three grandchildren.

OXFORD –  Martha Faye Flippo Turman, 62, died Thursday, May 31, 2012, at her residence.

Services were held Sunday at Pope Baptist Church. Dr. Gary Berry officiated. Burial was in Antioch Cemetery in Bruce. Wells Funeral Home had charge.

Turman, born July 15, 1949, in Aberdeen, to W.E. and Martha Ledbetter Flippo, was a retired LPN and a member of Pope Baptist Church.

Survivors include: her son, Allen Turman of Oxford; two sisters, Deborah Kaye Roach and Lisa Jo Lewellen, both of Cabot, Ark.; one brother, James K. Flippo of Pope and one grandchild.
