Letter to the editor

Homeowner thankful in spite of loss

(Editor’s note:  An August 6 fire destroyed the shop at the home of Tommy and Susan Camp at 685 Lake Suzie Road.

The location is removed from water sources for fighting fires and requires the coordination of several departments to continuously shuttle water to the scene.

Fortunately, no one was hurt nor was their home damaged. Tommy was able to move his work truck and race car from the structure before they were consumed by the flames.)

Even though it was too late, no fault of anyone, there are so many people that we would like to thank — Batesville, Pope, Courtland, Curtis-Locke Station and Bynum fire departments and Panola County Emergency Management Coordinator Daniel Cole — for coming out on a very hot Saturday morning.

To the ambulance crew that came out to help one of our firefighters, thank you for being kind and patient. Thanks also to Mr. and Mrs. Bark and their son who came to help and ended up needing help themselves.

To my brother, Johnny Vanlandingham, Ray Crow, Felix Bolen, Angie Raymond; Will, Roxanna and Haley Holder, words cannot express how much your being here meant to us. To our son, Drew, and our mother, Betty Zenor, just knowing you were here meant so much.

I called all of you in a panic and none hesitated to come.

May God bless everyone, but not least the family and friends who called or came by.

This day in time we all seem to take our lives as well as others’ for granted.

If you see a firefighter, his or her spouse or child, shake their hand because until that recent Saturday I never realized the risk of ultimate sacrifice they make on a routine basis to help others or how dangerous their jobs really are.

Again, thanks to everyone.

Tommy and Susan Camp
