The American Legion baseball teams started a tournament to determine who will end the summer in first place.

The first game on Monday night was between the second place Red Sox and the third place Yankees.

The Yankees came out swinging, scoring five runs in the top of the first. Scoring were left fielder Nathan Gabbard, third baseman Mason Wilkerson, shortstop Morgen Tubbs, second baseman Chris Cassiday and catcher D. C. Sheley.

The Red Sox answered in bottom of the frame with runs by outfielder Clay Harbour and catcher Adam Cook but the Yankees still led 5-2.

In bottom of the third, the Red Sox added two runs by Adam Cook and Cody Harbour to cut the Yankee lead to one run.

A leadoff walk by Red Sox’ Caleb Calloway started the bottom of the fourth before he stole second and third then scored on a double by Adam Cook to tie the game at five.

The Yankees were not finished, adding three runs in the top of the fifth by Cassidy, Sheley and Hunter Cook.

The Red Sox had no response in the bottom of the frame as the Yankees claimed the 8-5 victory for the right to play for the championship last night. The score was not available at press time.
