Rose Marie Betts

SARAH– Rose Marie Betts, 23, died Wednesday, June 15, 2011, at the Regional Medical Center in Memphis.

Services were held Saturday at Crenshaw Baptist Church. Burial was in Longtown Cemetery. Ray-Nowell Funeral Home had charge.

Betts was a graduate of Fairfax High School in Fairfax, Va. where she was a member of the ROTC program.

She attended Northwest Mississippi Community College in Senatobia from 2005-2007 and attended Rust College in Holly Springs from 2008-2010.

Survivors include: her parents, Joyce Roberts Betts of Sarah and Victor Betts of Fairfax; her grandparents, Steven and Barbara Hamberger of Coldwater and Gary and Rose Betts of Fairfax and her great-grandmother, Joyce Workman of Sarah.

Melvin Jackson Chandler Sr.

WATER VALLEY– Melvin Jackson Chandler Sr., 79, died Tuesday, June 14, 2011, at Yalobusha General Hospital in Water Valley. He was the father of Jacky Chandler of Batesville.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Chandler, born March 3, 1932, to the late Melvin F. and Jeanie Shephard Chandler, served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He graduated from Northwest Community College, the University of Mississippi and Liberty University in Lynchburg, Va. He was a Mason and a retired Baptist minister. Survivors along with his son include: two daughters, Martha Allen of Oxford and Linda McCullough of Paris; one son, David Chandler of Water Valley; two brothers, Clifton Chandler of Sumner and Clyde Herman of Longview, Texas; 11 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Doris Darlene Edwards

OXFORD– Doris Darlene Edwards, 78, retired from the University of Mississippi cafeteria, died Thursday, June 16, 2011 at her residence in Oxford.

Services were held Saturday at Waller Funeral Home with Rev. Billy Childs officiating. Burial was in Forrest Memorial Cemetery. Waller Funeral Home had charge.

Born in Morris, Minn., Edwards was the widow of Mr. Donald Edwards. She was a member of Union West Baptist Church.

 Survivors include: three daughters, Glenda Tedford-Hagood of Batesville, MS, Debbie McAdams of Olive Branch and Julie Young of Oxford; two sons, Kenneth D. Lawson of Tallulah, La. and Delbert “Bubba” Smith of Water Valley; one stepson, Robert Smith of Florida; one sister, Elaine Feilen of Las Vegas; one brother, Kenneth Crow of Kimberling City, Mo.; 16 grandchildren; 32 great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren.

 Memorial contiributions in Mrs. Edwards’ memory may be made to: Union West Baptist Church, 794 CR 313 Oxford, Miss. 38655.

Richard William McDonald

BATESVILLE– Richard W. McDonald, age 81, widower of Betty McDonald, died Sunday, June 19, 2011, at Baptist Memorial Hospital of North  Mississippi.

Visitation will be held from 5 p.m. – 7 p.m. on Friday, June 24, 2011 at Wells Funeral Home.

McDonald was born on October 14, 1929,  in St. Louis, Mo. to Everette Franklin and Helen Margaret Jaccard McDonald. He was an accountant for Carrom Industries where he served as a division director. McDonald served his country in the United States Marine Navy and then went on to serve in the Marine Corps during the Korean War.

Survivors include: by three daughters Mary Beth McDonald of Senatobia, Sally McDonald Wilkie of Sardis, Susan McDonald Stein of St. Louis; two sons, Robert “Bob” McDonald of St. Louis, Daniel McDonald of Alexandria, La.; four grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Homer Lee Marquis

BATESVILLE– Homer Lee Marquis, 85, husband of Mavis Marquis, died Friday, June 17, 2011 in Batesville.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday at Wells Funeral Home with Rev. Pat Ludlam officiating. Burial will be in Forrest Memorial Park. Visitation will be 5-8 p.m. Tuesday, June 21, 2011 at Wells Funeral Home.

Marquis, born June 21, 1925,  in Pittsboro, to the late Walter Hulon and Maggie Leonard Marquis, resided in Quitman County, until relocating to Joliet, Ill. in 1955. He was employed by General Motors, Fisher Body Division, Willow Springs, Ill.. He was the president of U.A.W. Local 558 serving for a number of years and returned to Mississippi after retiring making his home in Batesville. He was a member of Batesville First United Methodist Church, Lions Club, Masons, Sons of the Confederacy, V.F.W., Shriners, and the Batesville Police and Citizens Triad. He served his country as a marine in World War II and Korean War.

He was preceded in death by: his son-in-law, Rudy Fonseca;   brother-in-law, Elbert White; one sister, Eloise Marquis and brother-in-law, Early White.

Survivors include: his wife of 63 years, Mavis Rodgers Marquis of Batesville; three daughters, Connie Marquis Fonseca of Walls,  Jeanie Marquis Hughes of Hanover, Ind. and Anita Marquis of Batesville; one son, Homer Lee Marquis Jr. and his wife, Janet Sommers of Shreveport, La; one sister, Lartee Marquis White of Kalamazoo, Mich.; one brother, Glispie Marquis and his wife, Rena Corley of Brekenridge, Texas; nine grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren.
