Yankees get first win of season; Royals down A’s

By Brad Greer

Mason Wilkerson’s infield single with no outs in the bottom of the sixth inning which scored Morgan Tubbs lifted the Batesville Yankees to their first victory of the season 5-4 over the Red Sox in 13-15-year-old American Legion play Monday night.

The Yankees took a 4-2 lead into the top of the sixth before Gage Aldison drilled a two-out, two-run double off Zac Bolen to drive in Clay Harbour and Chase Durham to tie the game. Tubbs however led off the bottom of the sixth with a stand up triple into right-center that set up Wilkerson’s game-winning hit.

Bolen pitched the final two innings to register the win in relief of Tubbs and Joby Ellington who both tossed two innings each. Austin Towles took the loss for the Red Sox.

The Yankees took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first as Ryan Hitchcock scored on an error followed by a Tubbs’ RBI groundout that scored Ellington. The Sox then answered with single runs in the second and third inning to knot the game at 2-2 before the Yankees regained the lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth.

The only other hit the Yankees recorded on the night before the sixth was a third inning single off the bat of Tyler Pogue. Cameron Brown, Harbour and Durham singled for the only other Red Sox hits.

Royals vs. A’s

In the second game of the night, the Royals used a six-run second inning to claim a 12-8 win over the A’s.

Ridge Simmerman’s double to lead off the game followed by Scott Taylor’s RBI single staked the A’s to a 3-0 lead in top of the first. The Royals responded with six runs on two hits in the second to take a 6-4 lead as J. C. Harper highlighted the inning with a two-run single.

The Royals led 7-6 at the end of third and the A’s scored two runs in top of fourth to take an 8-7 lead. That did not last long as the Royals took the lead for good with two runs in bottom of the fourth and three more in the fifth.

The A’s registered seven hits in the game as Taylor doubled twice and singled while driving in three runs. Simmerman followed with a double and single  while Jacob Finnell doubled and Braiden Scott chipped in with a single.

Hunter Bryant scored three runs for the Royals and added a triple and double. Pez McGee and Ryan Darby contributed singles in the victory.
