James Edward Holcomb

FRISCO, Texas–James Edward Holcomb, 78, formerly of Crenshaw, died Saturday, March 26, 2011.

Services were Wednesday at Stonebriar Community Church in Frisco, Texas. Pastor Ralph Ehern officiated. A private burial will be held at a later date at DFW National Cemetery.

Holcomb, born Sept. 18, 1932, in Crenshaw, to the late Sam and Ada Harvey Holcomb, graduated from Ferriday High School in Ferriday, La. going on to attend LSU, LA Tech University and Northwestern State University. He served his country in the United States Air Force as a maintenance tech inspector (bombers and mapping reconnaissance aircraft). He was a veteran of Vietnam and Korean Wars and retired having attained the rank of Master Sergeant after 20 years service. After leaving the service he went on to work as a self-employed contractor for 13 years. He was very active in a volunteer capacity including VFW; Shriners; Frisco Fire Department; Scottish Rite Hospital; Masons and was a member of the NRA.

Survivors include: his wife, Claudia Faye Holcomb of Frisco; daughters, Janice Marie Rose of White Hall, Ark. and Laurie Faye Vining of Frisco and two grandchildren.

Sally Harmon Hunt

BATESVILLE–Elizabeth Ann “Sally” Harmon Hunt, 79, died Tuesday, March 29, 2011, at Tri-Lakes Medical Center.

Services will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. at Wells Funeral Home. Rev. Paul Middleton will officiate. Burial will be in Forrest Memorial Park.  Visitation will be held today from 5 p.m. – 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Wells Funeral Home has charge.

Hunt, born June 10, 1931, in Hot Springs, Ark., to James Earnest and Myrtle Irene Dashner Harmon, was a Mississippi Homemaker Volunteer, president of the local Club of Homemakers, 4H Club Leader and Sunday school teacher. She enjoyed making gifts for Unity Hospice.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ben F. Hunt.

Survivors include: one daughter, Bennita A. Hunt Saba and son-in-law, Louis Saba of Batesville; one son, Guary L. Hunt of Batesville; one brother, James Earnest Harmon Jr. of West Richland, Wash. and one grandson, Robert Saba of Cordova, Tenn.

Rev. Thomas L. Hastings

TUPELO– Rev. Thomas L. Hastings, 94, died Friday, March 25, 2011, at Sanctuary  Hospice House in Tupelo.

Services were Monday at Holy Innocents Episcopal Church. Graveside services were at Rose Hill Cemetery in Sardis. Ray-Nowell Funeral Home had charge.

Hastings, born Jan. 16, 1917, in Louisville, Ky. to Thomas and Anna Hastings, graduated from the University of Louisville and General Theological Seminary in New York City. He ministered for 50 years as an ordained priest in the Episcopal Church from 1945-1995. He ministered as a caring and dedicated Episcopal Priest for five years in Kentucky, five years in North Carolina, 10 years in Georgia and 30 years in Mississippi. From 1966 – 1985 he served as priest at Epiphany Episcopal Church in Tunica and Church of the Holy Innocents Episcopal Church in Como. In 1985 he retired from the active priesthood. From 1985 to 1995, he served as Priest in Charge at St. Stephens Episcopal Church in Batesville and Nativity Episcopal Church in Water Valley. During his retirement years in Sardis and Batesville, he served as President of Panola County Habitat for Humanity.

Survivors include: his wife of 66 years, Carolyn Warner Hastings; his four children, John Hastings of McClair, Va., Anne Koonce of Cleveland, David Hastings of Tupelo and Richard Hastings of Tupelo; his twin sister, Patty Hastings Barrow of Phoenix, Ariz.; nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Holy Innocents Episcopal Church in Como.

 Sarah Lois Henderson Lloyd

BATESVILLE– Sarah Lois Henderson Lloyd, 96, died Monday, March 28, 2011, at Tri-Lakes Medical Center.

Services will be held Saturday at noon at Viney Creek M.B. Church in Sardis. Rev. Ozine Thomas will officiate. Burial will be in Viney Creek Cemetery. Kenneth I. Roberson Funeral Home in Sardis has charge.

She was the daughter of Merce and Della Morgan Henderson and a member of Viney Creek M.B. Church where she served on the Mother Board.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Oliver Lloyd and two sons, Lewis and James Lloyd.

Survivors include: two daughters, Ola Clark and Sarah Brown; one son, Ellis Lloyd of Batesville; two sisters, Gladys Burdette of Memphis and Edna Edwards of Elgin, Ill.; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Ira Terrell Phillips Jr.

CRENSHAW– Ira Terrell Phillips Jr., 20, died Monday, March 28, 2011.

Services will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. at Holly Grove Missionary Baptist Church. Rev. Jessie Jossell Jr. will officiate. Burial will be in Longtown Cemetery. Visitation will be held today from 6 p.m. – 7 p.m. at Holly Grove Church in Crenshaw.

Survivors include:  his mother, Kim Strickland of Crenshaw; his father, Ira Phillps Sr. of Robinsonville; two sisters, Kiterra Strickland and Kristen Pickens; four brothers, Steven Ash, Marque D. Phillips, Antwone Phillips and J’Cari Williams and his grandmothers, Mattie L. Johnson and Mossie L. Phillips, all of Crenshaw.

Elizabeth W. Smith

 ENID– Elizabeth W. Smith, 78, died Saturday, March 26, 2011, at her residence.  

Services will be held Saturday, April 2, at 2 p.m. at Mt. Pleasant M.B. Church in Enid with interment at the church cemetery. Visitation will be Friday, from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. at Cooley’s Mortuary in Batesville. Pastor William Johnson will officiate.  Cooley’s Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Smith was born October 9, 1932, to Zannie Willie and Rose N. Harper in Scobey.  She was a member of Mt. Pleasant M.B. Church and a housewife.

Survivors include her husband, Dewitt Smith of Enid; her daughter, Margie Anderson of McDonough, Ga.; two sons, James Smith of Carrollton, Ga. and D.W. Smith of Flint, Mich.; one sister, Odessa Willie of Benton Harbor, Mich.; 16 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Ruby Jean Tiner White

COURTLAND–Ruby Jean Tiner White, 76, died Tuesday, March 29, 2011, at her daughter’s home in Courtland. She was the grandmother of Maranda Fortner Johnson of Batesville.

Services were Thursday at Wells Funeral Home. Dr. Tommy Snyder of First Baptsit Church officiated. Burial was in Forrest Memorial Park. Wells Funeral Home had charge.

White, born June 11, 1934, in Calhoun County, to the late Edward and Elizabeth Hardin Melton, was a member of Enid Lake Baptist Church and the Fellowship Sunday School C/lass of the First Baptist Church of Batesville. She was a retired factory worker.

Survivors include: four daughters, Patty Tiner Daugherty, Daile Tiner Johnson, Kathleen Tiner Fortner and Patricia Tiner, all of Courtland; two sons, Randy Tiner of Courtland and Tom Tiner of Enid; one sister, Mattie Bland of Batesville; one brother, Wayne Melton of Enid; 16 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.
