North Delta stomps Indianola but loses district series 2-1

North Delta may have thought they had the district series with Indianola in the bag after posting a 24-7 win in the first game Thursday afternoon.

However, the nightcap was a different story as the Green Wave fell 8-6 and lost the series 2-1.

Indianola won the first game in the series last Tuesday, 5-2.

The Green Wave (4-2 overall, 1-2 district) hit everything that came their way in the first game.

Senior left fielder John Cody Dalrymple sent the first pitch flying over the left field wall for an opening solo homerun. Two batters later, junior first baseman Luke Latham hit a two-run homer on his first pitch over the center field wall.

Latham’s home run scored junior second baseman Bailey Guckert who by beating out the throw to first.

In the first inning, every player got on twice except two and some batted three times before the third out. The Green Wave retired Matthew Chamoun as the Indianola pitcher and no one got an out while he was on base.

Zach Whitfield came to the mound for Indianola and pitched the complete game in three innings.

Senior Ethan Taylor pitched the complete game for the Green Wave in four innings and got the win. He faced 16 batters and gave up eight hits and six earned runs. He had four strikeouts, one walk and hit two batters.

Hitting for the Green Wave were: Dalrymple 4-for-4, four runs, one home run; Guckert, 3-for-4, three runs, one double, three RBIs (runs batted in), one hit by pitch; Latham, three runs, 3-for-4, one home run, one double, six RBIs; Michael Magee, 1-for-4, three runs, three RBIs; Taylor, 2-for-4, two runs, two RBIs, one hit by pitch; Austin Gant, 3-for-4, three runs; Jim Tom Copeland, 1-for-4, three runs, two RBIs, one walk, two hit by pitches; Derrick Shawn, 2-for-4, two runs, five RBIs, two doubles; and Sy Pritchard, 1-for-4, two runs, one RBI, one hit by pitch.

Game 3

In the nightcap, the Green Wave faced Indianola pitcher Ty Smith and had a hard time connecting with the ball.

The Green Wave was scoreless the first four innings. North Delta saw some daylight in the fifth inning, getting four runs across the plate.

North Delta was in scoring position to take the lead and the win in the bottom of the seventh, but a pop fly to right caused the second out. However, Latham got caught trying to go back to second for the third and final out.

With bases loaded in the fifth, Gant scored first on a two-RBI single by Dalrymple. The single also scored Copeland.

Shawn scored on a RBI single by Guckert. Latham made it to base on a fielder’s choice which drove home Dalrymple for the fourth run.

In bottom of the seventh, leadoff batter Dalrymple doubled to left. He scored on a  Guckert single. Gant hit the sac-fly to right field which drove home Guckert for the final run of the game.

Three pitchers carried the game for the Green Wave. Latham was the starting pitcher and pitched two and two-thirds innings. He allowed five hits and five earned runs, walked three while striking out one.

Ethan Waldrip came on in relief in the third and pitched two and one-third innings. He faced 14 batters, allowed six hits and three earned runs. He had two strikeouts and one walk.

Copeland finished the game pitching the last two hitless innings with four strikeouts.

Hitting for the Green Wave was Dalrymple, 2-for-4, two runs, two RBIs, one double; Guckert, 2-for-4, one run, two RBIs; Latham, 1-for-4, one RBI; Taylor, 1-for-4, Gant, 1-for-4, one run, one RBI; Copeland, 1-for-3, one walk; and Shawn, 0-for-3, one run, one hit by pitch.

The Green Wave will play its second district series with Marshall Academy this week. Today, the teams will play a junior varsity game followed by the varsity game at North Delta at 4 and 6 p.m.

Thursday, North Delta will travel to Holly Springs to face Marshall in a district doubleheader at 4 and 6 p.m.

ND Jr. High

North Delta Jr. High will be home Thursday to host Starkville in a double header beginning at 3:30 p.m.
