Tigers and Jaguars set to rumble Thursday

By Myra Bean
and Angie Ledbetter

North Panola may have thought it had a bad season, but it was not the only team facing a winless season.

South Panola will travel to DeSoto Central Thursday to take on the only winless team in 1-6A. This will be the final game of the season for the DeSoto Central Jaguars and end the regular season for the District 1-6A champion Tigers (10-0 overall, 6-0 district).

The Jaguars are on 17-game losing streak. Their last win was September 11, 2009 against Cordova, Tenn. They started out 2009 with a 3-1 record then lost all seven district games and ended with a 3-8 record. This is the second straight year the Jaguars have lost all their district games. They only won one district game in 2008.

The Jaguars have been outscored by opponents 360-78 this season.

“We’ll not overlook them,” said Pogue. “We have too much leadership on our team but what you don’t want to do is just say okay, let’s just coach this week. We want to continue to get better and keep the momentum going.”

Pogue said DeSoto Central is working with a young team and ended up in one of the toughest districts in the state.

Senior wide receiver Nick Brassell said the Tigers will still work hard this week and treat the Jaguars like any other team.

“We want to go, get it done and try to get some rest after it,” Brassell said.

Pogue said it is not about who they play.

“It’s let’s do what we are supposed to do,” he said.

There will not be a call-in coach’s show Thursday night because of the game. Pregame will start at 6 p.m. with a 7 p.m. kickoff
