By John Howell Sr.

Sixty percent of Como voters must vote in favor of a tourism tax in order for it to pass.

The vote is coming before the November 2 General Election, on October 26, in a special election.

The two-percent sales tax would apply to restaurant foods and drinks, and is estimated to generate about $55,000 annually for the cash-strapped municipality, according to town clerk Scott Rhines.

Como aldermen voted unanimously in September to set the special election.

A local-and-private bill, required for the election, was approved by the state legislature last spring.

If the tax measure passes, the revenue will be used to promote tourism in Como.

Polls will be open from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. at the Senior Citizens Building on Main Street.
Absentee voting is under way.
