Cougars grind to halt against Lafayette

By Myra Bean

Though they put their all into it, the North Panola Cougars could find very little offense against the Lafayette County Commodores.

The Commodores shut out the Cougars 49-0 Friday night at Cougar Stadium in a 2-4A district matchup. The No. 7 Commodores logged 417 yards of total offense, including 293 on the ground and 124 through the air.

The Cougars amassed 167 total yards with 90 on the ground and 77 through the air.

Granted, the young rebuilding Cougar team was without key players. Center Rashad Burdette was sitting out a game for getting kicked out of the Senatobia game with less than a minute to go September 24. Quarterback Martavious Butler was out for a concussion. He is expected to be back in action this week.

Offensive coordinator Ricky Hunt resigned from the team and coach Robert Hunter took his place.

The Cougars dropped to 0-6 on the season with this being the only shutout of the season.

There were some highlights on defense. Tony Hibbler was credited with two quarterback sacks and 11 total tackles. Martez Hook and Irvinta Young each got a sack.

Chris Connor had two pass deflections.

Senior athlete Ricky Hunt was the substitute quarterback for the week. He completed two of 13 pass attempts for 77 yards and threw one interception. He rushed 16 times for 34 yards.

Connor was the leading rusher with 10 carries and 54 yards. Other rushers include Hibbler, four yards on two carries and Cedric Clay, three yards on seven carries.

Barrett Loveberry had two receptions for 77 yards.

The Cougars are back on the road Friday to face the Tunica Rosa Fort Lions in district action. Kickoff is 7 p.m.
