James M. “Mack” Bryant

COURTLAND– James M. “Mack” Bryant, 67, died Friday, July 2, 2010, at his residence.

Services will be held Sunday at Central Academy Church of Christ at 2 p.m. with Robert Rawson and Paul Meacham officiating. Visitation will begin at the church 1 p.m. and also on Saturday from 5 p.m. – 8 p.m. at Wells Funeral Home. Burial will be in Forrest Memorial Park Cemetery.

Bryant, born April 24, 1943, in Marks, to the late James Henry and Annie West Bryant, served the city of Lambert for 23 and 1/2 years as Chief of Police. He was a member of Central Academy Church of Christ where he was a former deacon.

Survivors include: his wife, Glinda Louise Berryhill Bryant of Courtland; three daughters, Carrie Bryant Mitchell of Stendal, Ind., Tina Bryant Adams of Holcomb and Crystal Bryant McCormick of Courtland; two sisters, Jeanette Bryant Ware of Batesville, Shirley Bryant Moore of Enid; three brothers, James E. Bryant of Marks, David L. Bryant of Morton and Robert L. Bryant of Batesville; nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Leona Anderson Cook

MARKS– Leona Anderson Cook, 75, died Wednesday, July 7, 2010. She was the mother of Wanda Cook Hardy of Sardis, Nita Cook Goodwin of Batesville and Phyllis Cook Locke of Locke Station.

Services will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at Goodwill Worship Center in Marks. Barry Warren will officiate. Kimbro Funeral Home has charge.  Burial was in Forrest Memorial Park.

Cook, born August 16, 1934, in Moorhead, was a member of Goodwill Worship Center.

She was preceded in death by her husband, D.C. Cook.

Survivors along with her daughters include: one daughter, Rita Cook Smith of Bedford, Ind.; four sons, Ronald D. Cook of Water Valley, Dennis C. Cook of Marks and Michael D. Cook of Locke Station and Phil D. Cook of Hernando; two sisters, Alma Lambre of Cleveland and Mary Hayes of Louisiana; two brothers, Don Anderson of Greenville and Grady Anderson of Indianola; 22 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.

Melvin Carter

SARDIS– Melvin Carter, 88, died Thursday, July 1, 2010, at his residence.

Services were Saturday at Ray-Nowell Funeral Home.  Rev. Howard Beam and Hal Johnson officiated. Burial was in Rose Hill Cemetery. Ray-Nowell Funeral Home had charge.

Carter, born Jan. 26, 1922, in Sardis, to the late James Armstrong Carter and Emily Goodnight Carter, was a parts manager for Jackson Implement (John Deere), a plant supervisor for Armor Bond, a member of First Baptist Church in Sardis, an Army Veteran of WWII and received a Purple Heart, Bronze Star, WWII Victory Medal and Good Conduct Medal.

Survivors include: his wife, Mary Lee Rhodes Carter of Sardis; one daughter, Lee Carter Hitchcock and her husband Brian of Batesville; one brother, Jim H. Carter of Little Rock, Ark.; two grandchildren, Ryne Hitchcock and Mary Farrell Hitchcock.

Memorials may be made to Baptist Children’s Village, c/o First Baptist Church in Sardis.

Joshua Daniel Green

 SENATOBIA – Joshua Daniel Green, 23, died July 4, 2010 at his residence in Starkville. He was a carpenter for Jackson Construction and a member of New Zion Baptist Church in Weir.  He was also a member of the first graduating class of the Mississippi School of Arts in Brookhaven and an artist and guitarist.

 He was preceded in death by his father, Jerry Green and his grandmother, Carolyn Jackson.

 He is survived by his mother, Teresa Jackson Blaine and step-father, Norman Blaine of Sardis; brothers, Ashley Whitehead of Fort Sill, Okla., and Jeremy Green of Starkville; grandfather, Douglas Jackson of Starkville; paternal grandparents, Jack and Marinell Green of Tuscumbia, Ala.; great grandmother, Lois Gatlin of Starkville; and step grandparents, Charles and Helen Blaine of Richmond, Va.

Funeral services were scheduled for Thursday, July 8 at at Friendship Baptist Church in Sturgis. Rev. Halton Davis and Tim Buchanan officiated.  Burial was in Craig Springs Cemetery.

Frank L. Hines

MEMPHIS– Frank L. Hines, 75, July 3, 2010, at Saint Francis Hospital in Memphis.

Services will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. at Mt. Gillion M.B. Church in Sardis. Rev. Walter Newson will officiate. Visitation will be held from 4 p.m. – 7 p.m. at Henderson Funeral Home. Burial will be in Mt. Gillion Church Cemetery. Henderson Funeral Home has charge.

Hines, born Oct. 29, 1934, to the late Columbus Hines and Armelia Hines, was a tire tech. He was a member of Mt. Gillion M.B. Church.

Survivors include: one son, Bobby W. Hines of Courtland; one sister, Annie R. Mitchell of Memphis and one brother, Theods Hines of Arkon, Ohio; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Chrystal Gail White Jacobs

 SENATOBIA – Chrystal Gail White Jacobs, 30, of Senatobia died June 30, 2010.

Services were held Tuesday, July 6, at Pate-Jones Funeral Home. Burial followed at Fredonia Cemetery in Como. Pate-Jones Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

She was the wife of the late Tommy Joe Jacobs. She is survived by her daughters, Brianna Nicole Jacobs and Samantha Alexandria Jacobs, both of Senatobia; her step-son, Matthew Ryan Jacobs of Senatobia; her parents, Jerry and Sue White of Senatobia; her grandparents, Paul and Mary Katherine White of Senatobia; four sisters, Marie Greer, Sharon Wages, Jamie Burcham and Tina Newcomb, all of Corinth; two brothers, Jimmy Thrasher of Athens, Ala. and Tommy Thrasher of Corinth; eight nieces and nephews including Lisa Page, Eddie Wilson, Wendy Thrasher, Cody Thrasher, Hailey Thrasher, Chrystal Wages and Steven Wages.

In lieu of flowers the family requests any memorials be sent to the Brianna and Samantha Jacobs Trust Fund at Guaranty Bank and Trust, 250 Norfleet Plaza, Senatobia, MS 38668.

Tommy Joe Jacobs

 SENATOBIA – Tommy Joe Jacobs, died June 30, 2010 at the Regional Medical Center in Memphis.

Services were held Tuesday, July 6, at Pate-Jones Funeral Home. Burial followed at Fredonia Cemetery in Como. Pate-Jones Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Jacobs was preceded in death by his wife, Chrystal Gail White Jacobs. He is survived by his daughters, Brianna Nicole Jacobs and Samantha Alexandria Jacobs, both of Senatobia; his son, Matthew Ryan Jacobs of Senatobia; his mother, Alice Marie Jacobs or Oakland; two sisters, Carolyn Marie Dees of Enid and Rhonda Kay Wortham of Coldwater; and three brothers, Williams Jacobs of Oakland, Johnny Jacobs of Calgary, Canada and Jimmy Dale Jacobs or Oakland.

In lieu of flowers the family requests any memorials be sent to the Brianna and Samantha Jacobs Trust Fund at Guaranty Bank and Trust, 250 Norfleet Plaza, Senatobia, Miss 38668.

Rev. Leonard McGhee Sr.

CHARLESTON– Rev. Leonard McGhee Sr., 71, died Tuesday, July 6, 2010, at Charleston Hospital. He was the father of Larry McGhee, Terrance McGhee, Kerry McGhee, Lynell Hamilton and Joyce Williams of Batesville.

Services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Bethlehem Church in Charleston. Rev.Larry McGhee will officiate. Burial will be in Shiloh Cemetery in Courtland. Visitation will be held today from 1 p.m. – 6 p.m. at Eddie Robinson Funeral Home.

Rev. McGhee was the pastor of Bethlehem Church for 24 years.

Survivors along with his children include: his wife, Ora Harris McGhee; one son, Leonard McGhee Jr. of Senatobia; two daughters, Sandra Holt of Nashville and Lisa Davis of Jackson. He also had eight step-children and one sister, Bernice Mitchell of Nashville.

Dorothy Louise Russell

BATESVILLE– Dorothy Louise Russell, 74, a retired textile worker with Panola Mills, died Wednesday, June 30, 2010 at Baptist Memorial Hospital North Mississippi.  

Services will be Friday, at 10 a.m.. in the chapel of Waller Funeral Home with Rev. Charles Lipe and Rev. Leonard Russell officiating.  Burial will follow in Clear Creek Cemetery.  

 Born in Water Valley she was a member of Clear Creek Baptist Church where she was a Sunday School teacher.  She was a member of Gideon Auxiliary..

Survivors include her husband, Dovard Russell of Batesville; two daughters, Diana Redding of Oxford and Bonita Gemeinhardt of Batesville, two sons, Leonard Russell of Monticello, and Ronnie Russell of Batesville, MS; one sister, Janice Vaughn of Water Valley; one brother, Gene Watson of Memphis; nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

 The family has asked that expressions of sympathy or memorial contributions in Mrs. Russell’s memory be made to Clear Creek Cemetery Fund, 50 CR 313, Oxford, MS 38655.

Dale K. Tutor

BATESVILLE–Mrs. Dale K. Tutor, 92, a homemaker, died Sunday, July 4, 2010 at Tri Lakes Medical Center.

Services were Wednesday at Waller Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Robert Allen officiating. Burial was in Oxford Memorial Cemetery.

 Born in Lafayette County, she was the widow of Hubert L. Tutor Sr. She was a member of First Baptist Church, where she enjoyed attending her Sunday school class and the XYZ Club. She and her husband opened and operated Tutor’s Grocery in Crowder following his retirement from the US Marine corps after 27 years of service. Upon retiring from their grocery, they returned home to Oxford in 1972. She was a member of the Pricilla Club and Women’s Forum. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Mildred Kellum and Arlene Jetton, and three brothers, Latham King, Doc King, and Dudley King.

 Survivors include, her daughter, Lana T. Bridges, and her husband Murray, of Crowder; her son, H. Lane Tutor, Jr., and his wife Susan, of Senatobia; one sister, Sue Hiatt of Oxford; four grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.

 The family has requested expressions of sympathy in Mrs. Tutor’s memory be made to, Special Operations Warrior Foundation, P.O. Box 13483, Tampa, FL 33681-3483.

Ervia Virginia Street Visor

 KNOXVILLE–Ervia Virginia Street Visor, 92, formerly of Courtland, died Friday, July 2, 2010, at NHC Healthcare- Fort Sanders in Knoxville. She was the aunt of Panolian sports writer, Myra Bean.

Services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Shiloh M.B. Church in Courtland. Rev. Zannie Leland Jr. will officiate. Visitation will be held Friday 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. at Cooley’s Mortuary. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Cooley’s Mortuary has charge.

Visor, born June 14, 1918, in Courtland, to the late Jesse H. Street and Alma Virginia Sanford, was a retired nurse’s aide.

Survivors along with her niece include: one daughter, Wendeline Jones of Knoxville; two grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
