Doris “Dot” Ann Bruce
SARDIS– Doris “Dot” Jones Bruce, 64, died Tuesday, June 29, 2010, at her residence.
Services were Thursday at Wells Funeral Home. Pastor Barry Warren and Rev. Jimmy Scruggs officiated. Burial was in Dunkin Memorial Gardens in Kennett, Mo. Wells Funeral Home had charge.
Bruce, born March 16, 1946, in Haleyville, Ala., to the late John and Macie McCarley Jones, retired from Springs Industry in Sardis as a folding machine operator.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Edwin DeWayne Bruce.
Survivors include: one daughter, Donna Bruce Crumpler of Sardis; one son, Todd Bruce of Sardis and Glenn Bruce of Marks; one sister, Pat Colley of Pine Mountain, Ga.; one brother, J.D. Jones of Hackleburg, Ala.; seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
GARLAND, Texas– Bessie Marie Darby, 89, died Friday, June 18, 2010.
Memorial services will be held on Saturday, July 10 at Shiloh Methodist Church in Courtland. Pastor Chris Cooley will officiate.
Darby, born May 29, 1921, in Soldier, Ky. to the late James and Myrtle Butcher, served in the Women’s Corps during WWII. She graduated with an education degree in 1948 and taught over 30 years. She first taught at Pope High School and later in Blytheville, Ark. and Austin, Texas where she retired. She taught tenth grade biology.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Perry Glenn Darby.
Survivors include: one brother, Mitchell Butcher of San Diego; three sons, Stephen Perry Darby of Oklahoma City, Roger Earl Darby of Garland and Michael Hoffman of Salt Lake City, Utah; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Cathryn Virginia Bryan Harrison
BATESVILLE– Cathryn Virginia Bryan Harrison, 82, died Tuesday, June 29, 2010, at her residence.
Services were Thursday at First United Methodist Church. Rev. Pat Ludlam, Rev. Martin Case and Rev. John Howell Jr. officiated. Burial was in Magnolia Cemetery. Wells Funeral Home had charge.
Harrison, born April 27, 1928, in Calhoun County, to the late Rufus Cea and Sudie Virginia Pittman Bryan, was a member of the First United Methodist Church. She was the co-owner and founder of Harrison’s Furniture in Batesville. She was a graduate of Marks High School and received her degree from the Chicago School of Interior Design. She was a Charter Member of the Batesville Junior Auxiliary and in 1981 was chosen as Charity Ball Queen. She was also a member of the Eastern Star.
She was preceded in death by one grandson, Joseph Spears Nickle.
Survivors include: her husband, Price Bryan Harrison of Batesville; one daughter, Kay Harrison Nickle and her husband Steve of Batesville; two sons, Stanley Bryan Harrison of Batesville and Scott Price Harrison and his wife Mona Mitchell Harrison of Batesville and six grandchildren, Virginia Austin Harrison, Price Pittman Harrison, Monroe Mitchell Harrison, William Harrison Nickle and Bryan Steven Nickle.
The family requests anyone wanting to make memorials in Mrs. Harrison’s memory to send them to one of the following: St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, First United Methodist Church or the Batesville Junior Auxiliary.
Doris Norwood Scott
COURTLAND– Doris Norwood Scott, 93, died Saturday, June 26, 2010, at Tri-Lakes Medical Center.
Services will be held today at 11 a.m. at Cooley’s Mortuary. Burial will be in Lowe’s Cemetery in Sardis. Cooley’s Mortuary has charge.
Scott, born Feb. 13, 1917, in Crenshaw, to the late Leroy Norwood and Minnie Tucker, was a retired nurse and attended St. James Church of God in Christ.
She is survived by her nephew and niece who cared for her, Rufus and Lorean Norwood of Courtland.
Moses Smith
COMO– Moses Smith, 72, died Thursday, June 24, 2010, at Tri-Lakes Medical Center.
Services will be Saturday at the PGA Center in Sardis. Burial was in Mt. Moriah C.M.E. Church Cemetery. Felix Cauthen Funeral Home had charge.
He worked for the Sardis Lake Corps of Engineers and was a member of Mt. Moriah C.M.E. Church.
Survivors include: his wife, Bertha Lee Smith; one daughter, Wanda Kay Turner of Summerville, S.C.; one son, Terry Smith of Mattapan, Ma.; one sister, Alberta Taylor of Sardis; three brothers, Jimmy Smith, Robert Smith, both of Como and Johnny L. Smith of Memphis; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Bessie B. Sullins
SARDIS– Bessie B. Sullins, 97, died Monday, June 28, 2010, at Sardis Community Nursing Home.
Services were Thursday at at Ray Nowell Funeral Home. Burial was in Emory Cemetery near Como. Ray-Nowell Funeral Home had charge.
Sullins, born Oct. 30, 1912, to the late Walter Durham and Annie Stewart Durham, was the oldest and longest-serving member of New Hope Baptist Church. She was a homemaker.
She was preceded in death by: her husbands, William Sullins and Clarence Ruby; two daughters, Sue White and Bettie Cox and one son, Walter “Sonny” Ruby.
Survivors include: five daughters, Margaret Billingsley and Ruth Craig, both of Memphis, Nell Crawford of Como, Janette Davis of Horn Lake and Clara Gray of Heber Springs, Ark.; one son, Jerry Ruby of Como; 23 grandchildren and numerous grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to New Hope Baptist Church near Como.
Margaret Jane Wade
BATESVILLE– Margaret Jane Wade, 65, died Monday, June 28, 2010, at Tri-Lakes Medical Center after a battle with Alzheimer’s.
Services will be today at 3 p.m. at Batesville Presbyterian Church with visitation from noon – 3 p.m. Burial will be in Magnolia Cemetery. Dickin’s Funeral Home has charge.
Wade, born Nov. 21, 1944, in Batesville at Doctor Whitaker’s Clinic, was a graduate of Batesville High School and attended Delta State University. She worked many years in New York City as a publicist attaining the position of Vice-president of Warner Brothers Music. She later worked in Austin, Texas where she promoted a Willie Nelson Farm Aid Concert and New Orleans where she served on the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival “Jazz Fest” Board of Directors. After Hurricane Katrina she moved back to Batesville to care for her 96-year-old mother. She was part of the original staff of eight who created MTV-Music Television.
Survivors include: her mother, Jane Cox Wade and one brother, Robert “Buck” Wade.
