Herman R. Figgs

BATESVILLE– Herman R. Figgs, 90, died Thursday, June  17, 2010, at Methodist University Hospital in Memphis.

Services are Saturday at 11 a.m. at Cooley’s Mortuary Chapel. Burial will be in Batesville Cemetery. Visitation  will be held 10 a.m. – 7 p.m. at Cooley’s Mortuary.

Figgs, born March 16, 1920, in Crowder, to the late Clarence Figgs and Colberta Pegues Figgs, was a farmer and a member of Second Concord M.B. Church. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy.

Survivors include: two daughters,  Ruth Figgs Morris and Norma Louise Figgs Joiner, both of Batesville; one son, Herman Westley Figgs of Batesville; a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Willie Harrison

COURTLAND– Willie Harrison, 94, died Sunday, June 20, 2010, at St. Peter Villa Nursing Home in Memphis.

Services are Saturday at 2:30 p.m. at Spring Hill Asa M.B. Church in Courtland. Rev. Louis Wilson will officiate. Burial will be in Salem Cemetery. Visitation will be held 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. today at Cooley’s Mortuary.

Harrison, born Jan. 20, 1916, in Courtland, to the late James Dudley Harrison and Ada Rockett, was a farmer and a member of Spring Hill Asa MB Church. He was a deacon and a member of Panola County Lodge No. 6A and a U.S. Army Veteran.

Survivors include: one daughter, Faye Govan of Memphis; one brother, Hozie Harrison of St. Louis; two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Carl Denton Morehead

MARKS– Carl Denton Morehead, 87, died Wednesday, June 23, 2010, at Quitman County Nursing Home. He was the father of Royal Morehead and Milton Morehead of Locke Station and Malcom Morehead of Curtis.

Services will be held today at 11 a.m. at Goodwill Church of God. Burial will be in Forrest Memorial Park. Rev. Jerry Hill and Rev. Barry Warren will officiate. Kimbro Funeral Home has charge.

Morehead, born March 6, 1923, was a member of Goodwill Church of God and a veteran of the U.S. Navy.

Survivors along with his sons include: his wife, Frances Morehead of Marks; one daughter, Wanda Hester of Marks; one sister, Shirley Dodd of Winona; 11 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

Fannie Mae Pettis

SARDIS— Fannie Mae Pettis, 55, died Friday, June 18, 2010, at her residence.

Services were Thursday at Henderson Funeral Home. Burial was in Rose Hill Cemetery. Henderson Funeral Home had charge.

Pettis, born August 4, 1955, to Lillie Mae Johnson of Como and the late Lucius Osborn, attended Como Junior High. She was a member of Cistern Hill M.B. Church and a homemaker.

Survivors along with her mother include: two sons, Kelvin B. Pettis of St. Louis and Eric Pettis of Senatobia; one daughter, Brenda L. Pettis of Sardis; four brothers, Madison Robertson of Como, Lucius Osborn of Tupelo, Bobby Osborn of Sardis and John K. Osborn of Tupelo and two sisters, Jennie Bowie of Como and Betty Osborn of Como.

Joseph Thomas

BATESVILLE–Joseph Thomas, 86, died Tuesday, June 22, 2010, at Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Mississippi.

Services will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. at Concord M.B. Church in Batesville. Rev. Edward Thomas will officiate. Burial will be in Concord Cemetery. Visitation will be held Saturday from 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. at Cooley’s Mortuary. Cooley’s Mortuary has charge.

Thomas, born Feb. 27, 1924, to the late Stanley Thomas and Minnie Lois Griffin, was a regional forester. He was a veteran of the Marine Corp and a member of Concord M.B. Church.

Survivors include: his wife, Sarah Louise Thomas of Batesville; his godson, Dennis Gaines of Dana Point, Calif.; five sisters, Wilkie Hentz, Irma L. Martin and Lucille Cooper, all of Batesville, Annie Clara Smith of Tulsa and Lula Bell Child of Oktha, Okla. and one brother, Stanley Joseph Thomas II of Batesville.

John Daniel Woods

BATESVILLE– John Daniel Woods, 29, died Wednesday, June 23, 2010, from injuries received in an automobile accident.

Services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Wells Funeral Home. Burial will be in Forrest Memorial Park. Visitation will be today from 5 p.m. – 8 p.m. at Wells Funeral Home.

Woods was born July 27, 1980, in Oxford, to John Ivy and Linda Faye Weaver Woods.

Survivors include: two daughters, Anna Francis Woods and Paizley Grace Woods, both of Batesville; two sons, John Daniel Woods Jr. and Ethan Cole Woods, both of Batesville; his parents, Johnny and Linda Woods of Batesville; one sister, Johnnie Renea Smith of Batesville and his grandmother, Jimmie Levelle Weaver of Randolph.
