South Panola track advances to state

The South Panola boys track team competed in the 6A north half track and field meet at Tupelo High School on Saturday advancing to the state finals in six events to be held Saturday at Pearl High School.

Fifteen schools were represented in last weekend’s north half meet.

Ole Miss signee Montez Griffin of South Panola beat Donta Oliver from Columbus to win the 400-meter relay with a time of 47.01 seconds. Oliver had a time of 47.05 seconds. Oliver beat Griffin in the regionals in Oxford last week with a 47.99 time.

Antonio Conner advanced in two events. He won the 200-meter relay with a time of 21.65 seconds beating out Aaron Williams from Southaven who had a time of 21.71 seconds. Williams in return beat Conner in the 100-meter relay race with a 10.68 time. Conner logged a second place time of 10.73 seconds.

Nick Brassell also advanced in two events. He won the high jump with a height of 6’4” beating Sammy Doughty from Columbus who had a 6’2” jump.  Brassell placed fourth in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 41.10 seconds. Jabari Harris from Murrah won with a time of 40.16 seconds.

The 4×200-meter relay team of Griffin, Brassell, Greg Hayes and Conner advanced after they placed second with a time of 1:29.82. Horn Lake won with a time of 1:29.52.

Hayes also ran in the 4×200 meter relay race last week instead of Pierre Conner as reported. In team ranking after 17 events, Madison Central took first place with 87 points, followed by Tupelo 81, Clinton 80, Southaven 66, Horn Lake 62 and South Panola 57.
