James L. Barnes, 79, of Courtland, passed away Friday, March 8, 2024, at his home.
He was baptized as a child by The late Rev. O.C. Collins, Sr., pastor of Progressive Baptist Church. He was a 1962 graduate of BTW High School, Memphis. He loved the open road and the highways, and he spent over 45 years of his life working as a long-haul truck driver, working for several companies i.e. Bell Cartage, Riggs, Ryder and M & K just to name a few. He enjoyed spending time with his siblings and friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents Willie Barnes and Mary Louise Strong Barnes and sister, Shirley Bledsoe. He is survived by his long-time companion and friend, Stephanie P. Hearn, daughters, Dietrich Sanders of Chicago, and Jaquita Barnes of Memphis, and son, Jason Barnes of Spotsylvania, Virginia. Sisters, Mary Sanford, Batesville, Robbie Barnes, Chicago, Bessie Reed, Veraline Gaulmon and Velma Maclin (Harry) all of Memphis, Vernell McKie (John), Batesville, Betty Todd (Macon) Coldwater. Brothers, Kenneth Middleton (Rosland), Rialto, CA, Mack Jones (Julia), Memphis, Curtis Chapman (Demple), Courtland, Eteve Ester Young, Milwaukee, and a host of grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
The family will have a private celebration of life remembrance at a later date.
