Sardis Police Chief John Still was asked to resign from the police department or face termination during Tuesday night’s city meeting in Sardis. The discussion and vote was conducted in executive session as the matter was a personnel issue.
City Attorney Tommy Shuler verified Wednesday morning that the meeting’s minutes would reflect that a motion was made by Ward Three Alderman Mike Wilson asking Still to resign or face termination.
Ward Two Alderman Clarence Jones seconded the motion and Alderman-at-large Roy Scallorn cast the third vote in favor of removing Still as the department’s police chief.
Ward Four Alderman Rivers McArthur and Ward One Alderman JoJo Still voted against Wilson’s motion.
Sardis Mayor Rusty Dye has up to 10 days, according to state law, to veto the motion.
Dye could not be reached for comment Wednesday. A mayoral veto requires a vote from four aldermen to override the veto.
Aldermen also appointed Otis Jones as interim chief during the executive session.
Still, a former Panola County deputy, was hired as police chief in September, 2007.
