 Betty J. Green Appleton

SARDIS—Betty J. Green Appleton, 72, died Monday, February 8, 2010, at her residence.

Services were Wednesday at Ray-Nowell Funeral Home. Burial was in Rose Hill Cemetery in Sardis. Ray-Nowell Funeral Home had charge.

Appleton, born Aug. 3, 1937, to the late John Robert Green Jr. and Norman McLendon Green, was a homemaker and a member of Sardis Church of Christ.

Survivors include: her husand, Macel Appleton Sr.; two daughters, Suzanne Matthews of Brentwood, Tenn. and Amy Arnold of Sardis; three sons, Macel Appleton Jr., Jimmy Appleton, both of Pope and Jay Appleton of Batesville; two sisters, Sandra Sharp of Florence, Ala. and Linda Smith of Sardis; one brother, Johnny Green of Sardis and 10 grandchildren.

Charles C. “Charlie” Beall Jr.

HOUSTON,—Charles C. “Charlie” Beall Jr., 74, formerly of Batesville, died Sunday, February 7, 2010, at his residence.

Memorial services were Thursday at Second Baptist Church in Houston, Texas. A private burial with military honors was held prior to the service.

Beall, born March 28, 1935,  in Oxford, to the late Charles C. Beall Sr. and Jennie Dale Buford Beall, graduated from Batesville High School in 1953 and received two degrees from the University of Mississippi.  

A veteran of the United States Air Force, he worked for Texas Commerce Bank in Houston for 27 years and retired from the Institute for Rehabilitation and Research after 18 years of service as president and CEO.

He was an avid sports fan who loved to watch Ole Miss sports and followed South Panola football.

He recently received the 2009 Distinguished MBA Alumni Award from Business School at Ole Miss.

Survivors include: his wife of 48 years, Ines Anne Beall of Houston; two sons, Charles C. Beall III of Houston and Craig Beall of Atlanta; one sister, Jennifer Beall Wright of Pascagoula; one brother, Dudley Beall of Batesville and five grandchildren

Annie Lorene Lunceford Daves

POPE—Annie Lorene Lunceford Daves, 94, died Monday, February 15, 2010, at her residence.

Services will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Wells Funeral Home. Rev. Roger Richards will officiate. Visitation will be held today from 5 p.m. – 7 p.m. at Wells Funeral Home. Burial will be in Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Calhoun City. Full obituary information will be in Friday’s edition.

She was preceded in death by her husband E.C. Daves, Sr.

Daves was born on September 22, 1915 in Calhoun  City, to Perry E. and Clara Abbie Nelms Lunceford.  

Survivors include: one son: E. C. Daves Jr. (Ginny) of Germantown; one brother, Rupert Lunceford of Calhoun City; Granddaughters: Christina L. Daves Margaret Ann Finnie, Kim Finnie and six great-grandchildren, Jessica Daves, Christian A. Leininger, Huston M. Akins, Kayla M. Daves, Zachary J. Akins and S. Christopher Daves, II

Phyllis Keith Hance

BATESVILLE—Phyllis Keith Hance, 68, died Friday, February 12, 2010, at her residence.

Services were Sunday at Hosanna Family Worship Center. Rev. Damon Plummer officiated. Burial was in Forrest Memorial Park. Wells Funeral Home had charge.

Hance, born Feb. 17, 1941, in Philadelphia, to Udine Hopkins Keith Nichols and the late Harry Greer Keith, was a homemaker and a member of Hosanna Family Worship Center.

She was preceded in death by one daughter, Katherine Hance Brower and one son, David Michael Hance.

Survivors along with her mother include: her husband, William Travis Hance of Batesville; one daughter, Debbie Hance Hollowell of Batesville; one sister, Sue Keith Bullington of Newborn, Tenn.; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Jessie Loraine Morris Pitcock Hartzell

BATESVILLE—Jessie Loraine Morris Pitcock Hartzell, 90, died Saturday, February 13, 2010, at Cleveland Nursing Home.

Services will be today at 11 a.m. at Dickins Funeral Home. Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. until service time. Dickins Funeral Home has charge.

Hartzell, born Feb. 22, 1919, to the late Will Morris and the late Anna Martindale Morris, was a member of Independence Presbyterian Church and Sunshine Homemakers Club.

She was a retired clerk for Stubbs Department Store.

Survivors include: one daughter, Linda Williams of Batesville, MS; two sons, Harry Lee Pitcock of Batesville and Rev. Roy Hartzell of Sledge; five grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

Sammy Ray Oliver

BATESVILLE—Sammy Ray Oliver, 63, died Sunday, February 14, 2010, at his residence.

Memorial services will be held on Friday at 6 p.m. at Wells Funeral Home.

Oliver, born Nov. 16, 1946, in Clarksdale, to Roy M. and Ernestine Brasher Oliver, was a carpenter.

Survivors include: his wife, Christine Oliver of Batesville; one daughter, Lee Ann Weiss of Las Vegas, Nev.; two sons, Danny Oliver of Madison and Matthew Schaprio of Discovery Bay, Calif.; six step-sons, Mitchell Moore, Mike Moore, Frank Moore, William Moore, James Moore and Richard Moore, all of Chicago, Ill.; one brother, Kenneth Lee Oliver of Batesville and 10 grandchildren.

Crockett Walton Jr.

COMO—Crockett Walton Jr., 69, died Sunday, February 7, 2010, at Hines VA Hospital.

Services were Saturday at Felix Cauthen Funeral Home. Burial was in Forest Irene V.A. Cemetery in Memphis. Felix Cauthen Funeral Home had charge.

Walton was a member of Mt. Pleasant M.B. Church in Chicago.

Survivors include: his mother, Velma Walton  of Como; three brothers, Berkley Walton and John Walton, both of Como and Monro Walton of Southaven.

Bessie Ruth Purser

SOUTHAVEN—Bessie Ruth Purser, 97, died Thursday, February 11, 2010, at Baptist Memorial Hospital-Desoto.

Services were Monday at Wells Funeral Home. Bishop Stuart Taylor officiated. Burial was in Blackjack Cemetery. Wells Funeral Home had charge.

Purser, born Oct. 18, 1912, in Batesville, to James Blaine and Annie Belle Wilson Bevell, was a homemaker. She was a member of Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (Southaven Ward) in Southaven.

She was preceded in death by her husband, R.T. Purser; one granddaughter, Jamie A. Purser and one great-granddaughter, Amanda Purser.

Survivors include: two sons, Ralph T. Purser of Southaven, James H. Purser of Byhalia; six grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.

James “Jimmy” Andrew White Sr.

BATESVILLE—James “Jimmy” Andrew White Sr., 60, died Wednesday, February 10, 2010, at his residence.

Services were Saturday at Wells Funeral Home. Rev. Paul Middleton and Rev. Tommy Darby officiated. Burial was in Forrest Memorial Park. Wells Funeral Home had charge.

White, born Aug. 3, 1949, to James Monroe and Lillian Margurette Norwood White, was a member of Calvary Baptist Church and a retired manufacturing engineer with Parker Hannifin.

Survivors include: his wife, Lynda Goad White of Batesville; one daughter, Lindsey White Cannon of Batesville; one son, Andy White of Hernando; two sisters, Linda White Bolton of Pope and Joy “Nicki” White Ellis of Batesville; two brothers, Larry White of Enid and Barry White of Oakland and one granddaughter.
