Led by Erin Snider’s 11 points and eight rebounds, the North Delta Junior High girls basketball squad captured their second straight district championship with a 40-36 victory over Indianola Saturday night at Kirk Academy. Last season, the Lady Green Wave won the District 1- 1A crown before moving up to Class AA this season.
Julianna Morrow added nine points and nine steals for North Delta, who finished with a record of 21-3 on the season. Charla Shae Darby followed with eight points, and three assists. Hastings Neal also contributed with eight points to go along with six rebounds and two blocked shots. Claire Gant chipped in with four points.
“I am so proud of these young ladies. This group over-all has the best work ethic of any team I have ever coached,” said head coach Phil Douglas. “The dedication overcame youth and inexperience in making this a tremendously successful season. With four returning starters plus all of our key reserves this team is already looking forward to a three-peat for the 2010-2011 season,” said Douglas.
North Delta’s losses this year came at the hands of Pillow, Indianola and Memphis Home School, who won the AAU 14-and-Under National Championship last season.
The Green Wave advanced to Saturday’s title game with a 39-33 come from behind victory over West Memphis Thursday night. Snider once again led the way offensively with 15 points, eight rebounds and seven steals. Morrow followed hitting 10 of 10 from the free throw line with seven tips and four assists.
Darby added six points, four steals and four assists while Neal registered four points. Callie Blake Masterson and Courtney DuBravec rounded out the scoring with two points each.
