Downtown ceremony to honor military vets

Panola Memorial Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4968 will honor veterans during a brief program Wednesday, Nov. 11 at 11 a.m. on the Batesville Downtown Square.

Post Commander Bobby Hudson said that everyone is urged to join the salute to honor the nation’s veterans, especially local veterans. The time and date of the observance — 11th month, 11th day, 11th hour is based on the Armistice that ended hostilities in World War I on November 11, 1918.

It was called Armistice Day and designated a legal holiday by Congress in 1938.

In 1954, after World War II and Korea, Congress changed the name to Veterans Day.

Wednesday’s observance will include the national anthem played by the South Panola High School Band, taps played by Spencer Van Dyke and the laying of a wreath at the memorial marker, Hudson said.

Batesville minister Robert Rawson will make brief remarks, the VFW Commander said.
