Mallard Point’s Reed Hughes takes championship with 6-Under 138

Reunion Golf and Country Club hosted the 2009 Gulf States PGA Ladd’s Mississippi Chapter Championship held October 5 and 6 in Madison.

Reed Hughes, PGA of Mallard Pointe Golf Course, won the 36-hole stroke play event with a two-day total of 138 (70-68).

“I played about as good as I could play,” Hughes said. “I wasn’t able to play at all during June and July because of a detached retina. My future in golf was uncertain at that time.

“I didn’t expect to do well by any means, but I felt like I knew I could do it. I showed up with a different putter and a different attitude.”

Among those attempting to close in on Hughes’ lead were Steven Driggers, PGA of Greenville Country Club, who shot 2-under 142 (70-72) and Rich Fulkerson, PGA of Pine Belt National Golf Club, who finished at 1-under 143 (74-69). Hughes also led the field in birdies, making nine total over the course of the two days.
