Charles “Charlie” Leroy King

SARDIS– Charles “Charlie” Leroy King, 87, died Wednesday, July 22, 2009, at his residence.

Services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Union Baptist Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Rev. Albert Wilkerson, Rev. Bob Hickey and Rev. Sonny Smith will officiate. Visitation will be held today 5 p.m. – 8 p.m. at  Ray-Nowell Funeral Home.

King, born Sept. 13, 1921, to the late Charles Eugene King and Grace Atkinson King, was a service station attendant for B.P. Station in Sardis. He was a member of Union Baptist Church. He was a factory worker for Sardis/Roper Luggage Company.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Viola Simmerman King and son, Charles King Jr.

Survivors include: one daughter, Jeanette Wilkerson of Caledonia; one sister, Freddie Lee Hensley of Huron, Ohio; one brother, Robert King of Como; three grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Union Baptist Cemetery Fund.

Clyde Mitchel Melton

SARDIS– Clyde Mitchel Melton, 51, died Wednesday, July 22, 2009, at Baptist Memorial-North Mississippi.

Services will be held today at 11 a.m. at Wells Funeral Home. Rev. Charles David Melton will officiate. Visitation will be today at 9 a.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be held in Forrest Memorial Park. Wells Funeral Home has charge.

Melton was born Dec. 24, 1957, in Brazil to Audrey Norris Melton of Batesville and the late Billy Robert Melton.

Survivors along with his mother include: his wife, Bettye Ann Redwine Melton of Sardis; two sons, Daniel Quentin Melton and Eric Keith Melton, both of Sardis; three sisters, Melva Sue Melton Irish of Houston, Texas, Carol Ann Melton Schiele of Crowder and Jeannie Marie Melton Patton of Tucker, Ark.; three brothers, Stanley Melton and Roy Rogers Melton, both of Batesville and James Robert Melton of Cleveland, Texas and two grandchildren, Daniel Joseph Melton and Casey Clayton Melton.

Joseph Woodard

DRUMMONDS, Tenn.– Joseph Harvey Woodard, 82, died Monday, July 20, 2009, at his residence. He was the brother of W.C. Woodard and R.C. Woodard, both of Batesville.

Services were Wednesday at Wells Funeral Home. Rev. Doug Pepper officiated. Burial was in Forrest Memorial Park. Wells Funeral Home had charge.

Woodard, born June 6, 1927, to the late Joseph and Alchie Dees Woodard, was a retired manager of the 4-H Club Camp on Sardis Lake. He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII.

Survivors along with his brothers, include: his wife, Catherine Woodard of Drummonds, Tenn.; one son, Joseph Michael Woodard of Drummonds; six grandchildren, Kelly Self, Jay Belvin, Chuck Gabbard, Wendy Davidson, Tina Turosky and Pam Smith and 17 great-grandchildren.

James Edward Warner

SHELBY– James Edward Warner, 80, formerly of Crowder, died Sunday, July 12, 2009, at Bolivar Medical Center.  

Services were held Wednesday, July 15 at Kimbro Funeral Home in Marks. Burial was in Crowder Cemetery. Kimbro Funeral Home had charge.

Warner born Sept. 9, 1928, was a member of Crowder Baptist Church. He was a retired auto mechanic. He was a farmer and convenience store owner.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Bardrel Davidson Warner.

Survivors include: two daughters, Judy Macknally  and Linda Hollowell, both of Crowder; one sister, Dorothy Snow of Memphis; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
