The North Delta Green Wave advanced to the second round of the North A playoffs Thursday by defeating Central Holmes 12-6 in Lexington to take the series win. North Delta won the first game of the best-of-three games 9-0 last Tuesday.
North Delta, (13-5), will now take on Humphreys Academy for the right to play in the North State championship beginning next week. Game one of the three-game set was played last night at North Delta with game two switching to Belzoni today starting at 5:30 p.m. Game three, if necessary, will be played at North Delta at 5:30 Thursday evening.
Central Holmes put up four runs in the bottom of the first inning off Green Wave starter Ethan Taylor, but the North Delta bats responded in the second by scoring six runs and four more in the fourth for a 10-4 lead. Each team pushed across two runs in the fifth to close out the scoring.
Taylor, (5-2) went 5.2 innings to pick up the win. The sophomore fanned five while walking five on seven hits. Geri Lamm came on in relief and pitched the final 1.1 innings, striking out one while not giving up a hit.
Bailey Gurkert led the Wave at the plate with a double and two singles. Lamm and Britt Lawrence added a pair of singles while Taylor followed with a single and double. Austin Gant doubled while Michael Magee, Jim Tom Copeland and Bateman Greenlee all registered singles.
