The Heartbreakers lived up to their name as they became the 2008-09 City League Basketball Champions Wednesday night.
At first they pulled out an upset Tuesday night taking down the undefeated Serta team in the semi-finals and then clawed their way from an 11-0 first half start.
The Heartbreakers scored their first basket with 10:57 left in the first half. The Heartbreakers pulled within a basket 25-23 with 3:20 left in the half and on a three-pointer by Terry Walker, took a one-point lead with 3:05 left. At the half, the Heartbreakers led 28-27.
The second half was a back-and-forth effort between the teams. There were five lead changes and three ties until the Heartbreakers started pulling away with 8:41 left. They led by as many as seven throughout the remainder of the game.
Harold Lewis was the Heartbreakers’ leading scorer with 18 points. Sean of the Pepsi team was the leading scorer with 21 points.
Other scorers for Heartbreakers include Walker, 13 points; Bernard Berryhill, 7; Carlos Crump, 6; Glenn Reese, 5; and Mario Fenner Sr., 2.
