Throughout the regular season, the North Delta Junior High girls ran roughshod over their competition while compiling a 23-1 record along the way. Saturday afternoon, the Lady Wave set their sights on a district championship with a 45-14 thumping of Marvell, (Ark.) in the semi-final round at Delta Academy.North Delta faced off against West Memphis last night for the district championship game.

Meanwhile, the North Delta boys were not as fortunate, however, as they saw their season come to an end with a 50-43 loss to West Memphis in the semi-finals of the boys bracket. The Green Wave opened up the tournament with a 59-25 victory over Delta Thursday night.

After a slow start, the Lady Green Wave flexed their muscle against Marvell by jumping out to a 15-0 lead after the first quarter. Bradi Beard nailed a pair of three pointers at the 2:32 mark to get things started. Charla Shea Darby followed with a basket while Beard popped a jumper in the paint for a 10-0 advantage.

North Delta stretched their lead to 20-0 lead in the second quarter on Darby’s jumper and Katelyn Still’s two freethrows. Marvell finally got on the board with 1:30 left in the half on a three-pointer by Summer Nash but by then it was a case of too little too late as the Lady Wave took a 24-5 halftime lead.

North Delta put the game away in the third period by outscoring the Eagles 16-5 in the quarter. Laci Dubravec drilled a trey from the left corner to increase the lead to 32-5. Beard led all scorers with 12 points and four steals followed by Dubravec and Darby with eight points each. Freethrow shooting and missed opportunities were the downfall of the North Delta boys in their loss to West Memphis. The Green Wave converted four of 11 trips to the freethrow line while shooting only 36 (18-of- 49) percent from the floor.

Levi Garner’s jumper tied the game at 27 with 2:50 left in the third period only to have the Knights go on a 10-3 run to take a 37-30 lead going in the fourth quarter. Zane Devazier’s basket with 5:13 remaining gave the Black Knights a 42-32 lead. Devazier led all scorers with 19 points before fouling out at the 4:06 mark.

Bailey Guckert led North Delta in scoring with 12 points while Taylor Morris followed with eight. Garner and Renic Greenlee added six each with Luke Williams chipping in with five. Ryne Hitchcock rounded out the scoring with four points and William Dean scored two points.
