SARDIS–Annette M. Bolton, 48, died Tuesday, October 30, 2007, at Baptist Desoto Hospital.
Services are Saturday at 2 p.m. at Mt. Zion M.B. Church in Sardis. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery. Rev. Cedrick V. Jackson will officiate. Visitation will be tonight 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. at Mt. Zion M.B. Church in Sardis. Henderson Funeral Home has charge.
Bolton, born March 1, 1959, to Eugene Trammell and Neadie Trammell, both of Sardis, was a school teacher and a member of Mt. Zion M.B. Church. She graduated from North Panola High School.
Survivors along with her parents include: two sons, Dorian Trammell and Cardell Bolton, both of Horn Lake and three daughters, Tiffany Bullock of Texas, Ivory Bolton of Sardis and Crelicia Bolton of Horn Lake.
SOUTH BEND, Ind.–Alberta Thomas “Winnie” Gaines, 70, formerly of Batesville, died Saturday, October 27, 2007, at her residence.
Services are Saturday at 11 a.m. at Concord M.B. Church. Rev. Walter Smith will officiate. Burial will be in Concord Cemetery. Visitation will be today 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. at Cooley’s Mortuary and Saturday 10 a.m. – 11 a.m. at Concord M.B. Church. Cooley’s Mortuary has charge.
Gaines, born Sept. 7, 1937, to the late Stanley Joseph Thomas and the late Minnie Griffin Thomas, was a retired cafeteria worker for South Bend Community School and a member of Pilgrim M.B. Church in South Bend, Ind. She was on the Alter Guild and president of the deaconess board and a member of the senior usher board. She was a member of the Women’s Indiana State Bowling Association.
Survivors include: two daughters, Cathryn King of South Bend, Ind. and Nicole A. Gaines of Seattle, Wash.; two sons, Dennis Gaines of Dana Point, Calif. and Robert T. Gaines of South Bend, Ind.; five sisters, Wilkie Hentz, Irma L. Martin and Lucille Cooper, all of Batesville, Annie C. Smith of Tulsa, Okla. and Lula Bell Childs of Oktaha, Okla.; two brothers, Stanley Thomas Jr. and Joseph Thomas, both of Batesville; eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
COURTLAND–Mawanda L. Gilbert, 52, died Saturday, October 27, 2007.
Services will be Saturday, at 11 a.m. at New Jerusalem Church, 1285 Raymond Road in Jackson. Memorial services will be at Persimmon Hill Missionary Baptist Church in Enid at 3 p.m. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 8:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. today at Westhaven Memorial Funeral Home in Jackson.
Survivors include: her father Scott Denson; one daughter, Chandar Lewis; four brothers: Fred Gilbert, Andrew Denson, David Denson and C.S. Denson; four sisters, Ora Lee Cox, Matary Madkins, Betty Walker and Rose Marie Berry and two grandchildren.
SENATOBIA– Mary Ella Plair, 71, died Sunday, October 26, 2007, at North Oak Regional Medical Center. She was the sister of Joe C. Gardner of Batesville.
Services are Saturday at 1 p.m. at Freespring C.M.E. Church in Como. Burial will be in Freespring Church Cemetery. Felix Cauthen Funeral Home has charge.
Plair was a cook and a member of Freespring C.M.E. Church.
Survivors along with her brother include: five sisters, Alice Cole of Tupelo, Annette Plair of Senatobia, Mary Louise Virgil of Como, Teresa Geter of Senatobia and Annie Lou Geter of Tupelo; three sons, Wallace Johnson of Memphis, Walter Johnson of Southaven and Allen Plair of Holly Springs; one sister, Ruby Greer of Como; three brothers, Jerry Gardner of Como, Willie Joe Gardner of St. Louis, Mo. and Charles Herod of Memphis; 18 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.
BATESVILLE– Sara Boothe “Boozey” Carothers Woodruff Vance, 96, widower of John David “Dave” Vance and Lee T. “Cowboy” Woodruff, died, Monday, October 29, 2007, at Helena Regional Center in Helena, Ark.
Services were Thursday at First United Methodist Church. Rev. Ed Woodall and Rev. Carolyn Doering officiated. Burial was in Magnolia Cemetery. Dickins Funeral Home had charge.
Vance, born March 14, 1911, in Batesville to the late John Boothe and Leona Thomas Lewis Carothers, graduated from Batesville High School and attended MSCW (MUW).
In 1933 she married Lee Thornton “Cowboy” Woodruff of Batesville. He passed away in 1947. She married John David “Dave” Vance in 1957. In earlier years, she served as office manager for TVEPA. Later she worked in the cotton office of Anderson Clayton with her husband Dave Vance. She was a member of First United Methodist Church of Batesville. She served, as a Church treasurer for many years, was a church historian and a long time faithful member of the Truth Seekers Sunday School Class.
She was a member of James Gilliam Chapter of DAR, serving as a registrar, member of the Colonial Dames of 16th Century and the Court of Honor. She belonged to the Panola Historical and Genealogical Society and the Batesville Woman’s Club.
She had recently been living in Helena, Ark. where she attended Helena First United Methodist Church.
Survivors include: one daughter Bettye Woodruff Hendrix of Helena, Ark.; her step-daughter, Margaret O’Keefe of Batesville; one son, James Lee “Cowboy”Woodruff of Milton, Fla.; one sister, James Carothers Herron of Batesville; one brother Oliver Smylie Carothers of Batesville; eight grandchildren, Richard D. “Rick” Hendrix of Helena, Ark., Ronald L. “Ron” Hendrix of Madison, Lee Woodruff of Hattiesburg, Phillip B. Hendrix of Castle Rock, Colo. Sara W. Engle of Matthews, N.C., Ryan W. Whitehead of Ridgeland, Todd Mixon and Shoub Sumrall, both of Hattiesburg and 16 great-grandchildren and numerous step-grandchildren.
CHARLESTON– Wilma Kathleen Aven Robinson, 73, died Tuesday, October 30, 2007. She was the sister of Troy Aven of Batesville.
Services were Thursday at Newsom Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in Magnolia Garden in Charleston. Newsom Funeral Home had charge.
Robinson was a homemaker.
Survivors along with her brother include: her husband, E.L. “Buddy” Robinson of Charleston; one daughter, Kathy Robinson Stribling of Water Valley; one son, Samuel Herbert Robinson of Sumner; two sisters, Joyce Gentry and Frances Gentry, both of Charleston; one brother, Earl Aven of Glendora; three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Mary Louise Wall Winkleman, 103, died Tuesday, October 16, 2007, at her residence. She was born Nov. 18, 1903, to the late Fleming Leigh Wall and Bettie Martin Cooper Wall in Batesville.
Services were Saturday, October 20, 2007, at Memorial Park Funeral Home. Burial was in Memorial Park Cemetery. Memorial Park Funeral Home of Memphis had charge.
Winkleman received an associate degree from Mississippi State College for Women and then moved to Memphis in the 1920’s. She worked as a private secretary for several firms prior to joining the Second Army Headquarters during World War II. She later received letters of commendation for her service as secretary with the Regional Office of the Post Office Department in Memphis before retiring in 1971.
She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church and had previously been a member of Madison Heights United Methodist Church for 40 years where she was secretary of the Administrative Board for 10 years and served on most of the committees of the church.
She was the great-aunt of Lynn Culbreath Schell of Harrisburg, Pa., formerly of Batesville.
The family requests that memorials be made to the Church Health Center, 1210 Peabody Ave., Memphis, Tenn., 38104.
SARDIS– Tyson S. Wilkerson, 81, died Wednesday, October 31, 2007, at Sanctuary Hospice in Tupelo.
Services are Saturday at 1 p.m. at Union Baptist Church in Sardis. Burial will be in Union Cemetery. Visitation will be Saturday at 10 a.m. until service time at Union Baptist Church. Wells Funeral Home has charge.
Wilkerson, born April 10, 1926, in Senatobia, to the late Claude Thomas and the late Cressy Hudspeth Wilkerson, was a member of Union Baptist Church, retired from Gould Battery Company of Memphis and was a U.S. Army Veteran of WWII.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Katheryn Bailey Wilkerson.
Survivors include: two sons, Rev. Albert W. Wilkerson of Ripley and Thomas S. Wilkerson of Courtland; one brother, Claude Lamar Wilkerson of Texas; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
