George “Pete” Butler

SARDIS–George “Pete” Butler, 73, died Saturday, October 20, 2007, at Grenada Lakes Medical Center.

Services are Saturday at 11 a.m. at Mt. Gillion M.B. Church in Sardis. Rev. Walter Newson will officiate. Burial will be in Mt. Gillion Cemetery in Sardis. Visitation will be today 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. at Cooley’s Mortuary and Saturday 10 a.m. – 11 a.m. at Mt. Gillion M.B. Church. Cooley’s Mortuary has charge.

Butler, born June 28, 1934, in Sardis, to the late Odell “Coon” Butler and the late Mattie Lou Adams Butler, was a member of the U.S. Air Force and Mt. Gillion M.B. Church. He was a retired die setter for Dana Corporation in Chicago.

Survivors include: his wife, Frances Butler of Sardis; one daughter, Bonita R. Butler of Springfield, Mass.; four sisters, Mattie Spears, Juanita Emmons, Annie Perry and Izella Butler, all of Batesville and six brothers, E.C. Butler, Willie Butler and Jesse Butler, all of Batesville, Odell Butler of Chicago, Arthur Butler of Broadview, Ill. and Joe Oliver of Memphis.

Betty Jean Still Glenn

BATESVILLE–Betty Jean Still Glenn, 74, died Wednesday, October 24, 2007, at Baptist Desoto Hospital.

Services are Saturday at 11 a.m. at Wells Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be in Forrest Memorial Park. Visitation will be today 5 p.m. – 8 p.m. at Wells Funeral Home. Wells Funeral Home has charge.

Glenn, born Jan. 30, 1933, to the late Jadie and Bessie Scruggs Still, was a Methodist and retired payroll clerk for Poloron in Sardis.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William E. “Bill” Glenn.
Survivors include: three daughters, Gail Glenn Daugherty and Pam Glenn Weaver, both of Batesville and Lisa Glenn Hill of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; one brother, Cecil Still of Batesville; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Dorothy K. Johnson

CHARLESTON–Dorothy K. Johnson, 56, died Tuesday, October 23, 2007, at Tallahatchie General Hospital.

Services are Saturday at 11 a.m. at Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church. Rev. William Johnson will officiate. Burial will be in Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church Cemetery. Clark-Williams Funeral Home has charge.

Johnson, born May 10, 1951, to Van Eva Flowers of Batesville, was a Baptist.

Survivors along with her mother include: two sons, Anthony Q. Kimble of Charleston and Charles K. Dailey of Memphis; one daughter, Monique Johnson Dailey of Memphis; three brothers, Jessie Flowers of Pope, Frank Flowers of Milwaukee, Wis. and Ricky Flowers of Batesville; two sisters, Edna M. Flowers of Courtland and Bobbie Brown of Batesville; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Mary Ellen Legge Johnson

BATESVILLE–Mary Ellen Legge Johnson, 79, died Tuesday, October 23, 2007, at her residence.

Services are today at 2 p.m. at Wells Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be in Hebron Cemetery in Sardis. Rev. Bob Maddux, Dr. David Ball, Roger Johnson and Rev. Ray Legge will officiate. Wells Funeral Home has charge.

Johnson, born July 8, 1928, to the late Edna Virginia Hill and the late Ira Francis Legge, was a homemaker. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Batesville where she served in the Senior Adult Choir. She was a member of “Willing Workers” Sunday school class and a member of the “Keenagers” group.

Survivors include: her husband of 59 years, Otis E. Johnson of Batesville; three daughters, Cheryl Johnson Grace and husband, Jimmy of Bruce, Pat Johnson Ledbetter and husband Gary of Bruce and Bonnie Johnson  Hall of Pearl; three sons, Roger Johnson and wife Debbie of Senatobia, David Johnson and wife, Tina of Hernando and Barry Johnson and wife Kim of Como; three sisters, Margaret Legge Askew of Memphis, Frances Legge Moore of Batesville and Jean Legge Crowell of Lebanon, Tenn.; one brother, Rev. Albert “Ray” Legge of Sardis; 16 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

John Joseph “Joe” Scallorn

SARDIS–John Joseph “Joe” Scallorn, 81, died Thursday, October 18, 2007, at the VA Hospital.

Services are Saturday at 11 a.m. at Hebron Baptist Church. Burial will be in Hebron Baptist Church Cemetery. Family Funeral Care of Memphis has charge.

Scallorn served in the Navy during WWII. He was a member of GWRRA and attended Hebron Baptist Church in Sardis. He was a Shriner and retired from Bell South.

Survivors include: his wife of 22 years Evelyn Jean Scallorn; three daughters, Ursula Pruitt, Debbie Wasson and Faith Prince, all of Memphis; five sons, Johnny Scallorn of Coldwater, Mark Steven Carroll, Michael Carroll and Eddie Brown, all of Memphis and Bobby Brown of Brighton, Tenn.; one sister, Betty Ann Hill of Oxford and four grandchildren.
