COURTLAND–Larry Obey, 53, died Friday, October 5, 2007, at Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Mississippi.
Services are Wednesday at 1 p.m. at Salem M.B. Church in Courtland. Rev. Larry Itson will officiate. Visitation will be today 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. at Cooley’s Mortuary and Wednesday noon – 1 p.m. at Salem M.B. Church. Burial will be in Salem Cemetery. Cooley’s Mortuary has charge.
Obey, born Sept. 15, 1954, in Courtland, to the late Minnie K. Obey and Eugene Strong Sr. of Courtland, was a member of Salem M.B. Church.
Survivors along with his father include: his step-mother, Lelia Strong of Courtland; eight sisters, Betty Sanford, Aline Obey, Jearline Moering, Lisa Barksdale and Patricia Strong, all of Courtland, Linda Faye DeShields of Bolivar, Tenn., Casey Bledsoe of Batesville and Sallie Gene Scott of Pittsburg, Calif. and eight brothers, Ricky Knox, Sherman Obey, Willie Strong, Mike Strong, Arthur Strong and George Strong, all of Courtland, Eugene Strong Jr. of Batesville and James Strong of St. Louis, Mo.
BATESVILLE–Sue Hastings Reed, 69, died Saturday, October 6, 2007, at her residence.
Memorial services were Sunday at Wells Funeral Home Chapel. Wells Funeral Home had charge.
Reed, born Dec. 13, 1937, in Little Texas to Lucille Ledbetter Hastings of Batesville and the late James L. Hastings, was a member of Enon Baptist Church.
After attending school at Crowder and graduating in 1955, she attended Clark College for one year. She worked at the Batesville Hosiery Mill before moving to Memphis and working in the computer field. After many years of creating artistic clothes for her children and grandchildren, she opened her own business, “Stiches by Susi.”
Survivors along with her mother include: her husband, William Z. Reed III of Batesville; one daughter, Susanne Reed Woods of Batesville; one son, William Z. Reed IV and wife, Diana of Batesville; one sister, Myrt Hastings Guinn of Weslaco, Texas; two brothers, James Walker Hastings of Houston, Texas and William Mark Hastings of Batesville and six grandchildren, Kenzi, Dayle, Fayte, Gauge and Quint Reed of Batesville and Colby Woods of Olive Branch.
CONYERS, Ga.–Brandi Ledbetter Sheliga, 32, formerly of Batesville, died Sunday, October 7, 2007, at Bockdale Medical Center in Conyers, Ga.
Services will be Wednesday 3 p.m. at Wells Funeral Home. Burial will be in Forrest Memorial Park. Rev. Ken Hester and Rev. Clay Baker will officiate. Visitation will be today 5 p.m. – 8 p.m. at Wells Funeral Home. Wells Funeral Home has charge.
Sheliga born Aug. 14, 1975, to the late Danny Gaines and Fran Ledbetter Surrette of Covington, Ga., was a homemaker and a member of Heritage Hills Baptist Church in Conyers, Ga.
She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Bobby A. Ledbetter and Carson and Virginia Helms, and her great-grandparents, Walter C. Moore and James C. and Mary Lay Ledbetter.
Survivors along with her mother include: her husband, Douglas Sheliga of Conyers, Ga.; three daughters, Mary Kateland Smith, Laken McKensie Smith and Alden Grayson “Graysie” Smith, all of Conyers, Ga.; her step-father, Kevin Surrette of Covington, Ga.; one brother, Chase Ware of Covington, Ga.; one half brother, Daniel Gaines of Courtland; one step-brother, Zane Surrette of Courtland; her grandmother, Pat Ledbetter-Massey and husband Sam of Walnut Ridge, Ark.; four uncles, Joe Ledbetter and wife Judy and their son, Drew of Sardis, Clay Gaines and wife Benny and their sons, Ben and Preston of Courtland, Ronnie Helmes and wife Donna of Courtland and Falcon Helms of Courtland; one aunt, Janice Wardlaw and husband, Vick and her great-grandparents, Lorene Moore Musick and husband Walter of Batesville.
