Turning up the heat just a notch, the Tigers outscored Coffeeville 21-10 in the second quarter for a 28-24 halftime lead.

South Panola put up a 20 point third quarter to put the game out of reach and held Coffeeville to seven.

Lady Tigers go 0-3 following holidays
By Myra Bean

The South Panola Lady Tigers lost all three games in the Oxford Tournament last week.

Lady Tiger head coach Ralph Stallings did not have many comments about the performance, or the lack thereof, of the Lady Tigers last week.

The team has not been active since before the Christmas holiday when it lost to Olive Branch in the final game before the break.

The Lady Tigers (8-9 overall, 1-1 district) will get a chance to break that four game slide they are on when they travel to Grenada tonight to take on the Lady Chargers. South Panola lost that first game 47-42 back in November.

Last Thursday night, South Panola lost to Oxford 52-32 in its first game of the tournament. Oxford held a 31-15 halftime lead. Courtney N. Jones led the Lady Tigers with eight points.

Friday night, Coldwater defeated the Lady Tigers 64-42. Shanice Williams connected on five three-pointers to lead the Lady Tigers with 15 points. Kim Sanford had eight points.

Coldwater had a 31-13 halftime lead. Ashley Daniel of Coldwater was the game high scorer with 23 points.

Saturday night against Coffeeville, South Panola turned in its best game yet but still lost 52-44.

Coffeeville led 26-19 at the half.

Sanford led the Lady Tigers with 14 points, followed by Tenisha Mitchell with nine points and N. Jones with eight points.

Tipoff at Grenada is 4 p.m.

BJH splits games with Senatobia
By Myra Bean

The Tigers and Lady Tigers of Batesville Jr. High hosted Senatobia in four games last Thursday night.

The Batesville Jr. High seventh grade boys and girls won while the eighth grade teams lost.

7th Grade Girls

The seventh grade Lady Tigers won 17-11. They jumped out to a 6-0 lead with 6:16 left in the first half. The teams play 16 minute halfs.

Senatobia tied the game at six with 47.8 seconds left on a steal and a field goal.

With 17.9 seconds left Lady Tiger Brittany Moore stole the Senatobia ball and scored to give Batesville an 8-6 halftime lead.

Both teams managed scores in the first minute of the second half as the lead changed hands two times. Batesville retook the lead 10-9 on a Dephanie Tucker field goal with 15:01 left in the game and never relinquished the lead again.

7th Grade Boys
After Senatobia got on the boards first and Batesville tied the game at two, the Tigers never looked back and went on for a 32-15 win.

The Tigers led 20-8 at halftime. There was not much Senatobia could do with this fast-paced Tiger machine.

8th Grade Girls
The eight girls who make up the eighth grade team have a big job on their hands every time they take the court.

Despite that they play the entire 32 minutes like they have seven or eight people in reserve, not just the two relief players throughout the game.

Though Senatobia had a 14-8 halftime lead, the hustle and low post play of the Lady Tigers tied the game at 19 on a Shelby Johnson field goal with 5:32 left in the game.

The Lady Tigers just never gave up. In the second half back to back field goals by Chasity Kearney brought the Lady Tigers within five points, 17-12. Forcing Senatobia to turn over the ball and foul, Jasmon Houston hit two free throws with 9:32 left in the game which kept the game within five, 19-14.
Kearney stole the inbound pass for Batesville and Houston was good for a three-pointer to bring the Lady Tigers within two points, 19-17, with 6:38 left in the game.

That was Batesville’s last score as Senatobia was able to use its press and relieve its tired players with the other seven players sitting on the bench for a final 23-19 win.

8th Grade Boys
The eighth grade Tigers had a hard time finding their footing as they lost 31-19.

Senatobia jumped out to a 6-0 lead before an Antonio Jones field goal with 12:30 left in the first half.

Senatobia led 17-6 at halftime.

Not much changed in the second half for Batesville. Senatobia even led by as many as 15 points a couple of times in the second half.

Upcoming Schedule
Batesville Jr. High played in Oxford last night but the scores were not available at press time.

Batesville Jr. High will host a round robin tourna-ment of eighth grade teams only Friday and Saturday with Southaven, Grenada and Como also playing.

South Panola Tiger baseball center fielder Jonathan Flint was in the outfield doing drills with the rest of the team during the first day of spring practice last Thursday. The Tigers will kick off the 2006 season on February 18.

Green Waves fall short in Kirk Tournament
By Myra Bean

The North Delta men only won one of three games in the Kirk Academy tournament held last week.

Thursday night the Green Wave defeated Winona Christian 46-32. This was the Green Wave’s first win in four games.

The Green Wave jumped out to an 18-5 lead using the half court offense most of the night.

"Our size was the main factor," said head coach Brad Wilson.

North Delta starters have an average height of 6’0" with the tallest, Nathanael Abernethy at 6’5" and the shortest being Jacob Gurley at 5’10".

Wilson was pleased with the way the team "crashed the boards" and brought down the rebounds.

"Brandon White and Austin Boling did a good job hustling and rebounding," Wilson said. "They were big contributors."

Wilson said White shot well from the floor as he scored 11 points for the Green Waves.

"Austin had several good offensive rebounds," Wilson added.

Jacob Gurley led the Green Wave in scoring with 15 points. Abernethy scored eight points. Boling and Dakota Mabry scored six points each.

In Friday night’s contest, North Delta lost to Heritage 52-32. They had lost to Kirk Wednesday night 59-40.

Against Heritage, Wilson said the first quarter was the best first quarter they had played the last five ballgames. North Delta led 13-11 at the end of the quarter.

Heritage took the Green Wave’s measure and came with the half court press. According to Wilson, the Green Waves buckled.

Heritage outscored the Green Wave 17-4 in the second quarter for a 28-17 halftime lead.

The Green Waves are missing point guard Evan West who is still recovering from a broken ankle. West is expected to be back full time on the court by the end of January.

Gurley led the Green Waves with eight points.

Lady Green Waves
The Lady Green Waves still have not put together a win during regular season play and also lost their second game of the Kirk tournament 29-19 to Lee, Ark. Thursday night.

The Lady Waves were in the game in the first quarter and were down 6-5. Neither team ever scored in double figures in any quarter but Lee was able to keep the game away from the Lady Waves.

Austin Jenkins and Kathleen Snyder were the leading scorers for the Green Waves with six points each.

The Green Waves will be back in regular action with three games this week.

Tonight they will travel to Bayou Academy for district games beginning at 4 p.m.

Thursday, the Green Waves will host Delta in non-conference action beginning at 3 p.m. Friday, the Green Waves will be back on the road to Lee, Ark. for non-conference games beginning at 4 p.m.

College bowl season ends
     with two great games
Two great bowl games to go out on. But even before that was LSU taking Miami to serious school in the Peach Bowl.

They simply kicked them in the face and didn’t let up. I enjoyed Alabama’s last-second win and didn’t get to see much of Florida with everyone on at the same time. My considered opinion is they should have played a couple of the games on New Year’s Day. I know all about the NFL on Sunday but it was too many on Monday.

Typically, I’m going with the SEC, Peyton, Eli or the underdog. The slant ABC had on the National Championship game was pretty obvious.

I never once saw a Texas player’s parents shown on camera and the half-time "expert analysis" was all about how winning the second half was nothing new for Southern California.

But if the Heisman vote had happened after the Rose Bowl, it would have Vince Young’s name on it. Most seem to forget the reason for the outstanding play by the superstars was only made possible by the outstanding job the rest of the team did on each play.

Doug Flutie had a great play in one of the "nothing" games to end the regular season last week. Not too many have even heard of a drop kick, much less ever seen one in a game but ole Doug did.

On a try after a score, he lined up 10 yards behind the center and when the ball was snapped to him he dropped the ball and kicked it as it hit the ground for the extra point. The last time a drop kick scored a point in the NFL was in 1941.

In a drop kick, the kicker holds the ball out like he’s going to punt it but drops it and kicks the ball preferably just as it touches the ground. I’m guessing there were never too many of these anyway what with all the possibilities of disaster from the different ways a football can bounce after hitting the ground.

I had an unusual kick play in a high school game many years ago. In high school rules only, if a player makes a legal fair catch, his team may elect to free kick for a field goal.

The punting team was backed up on their own one-yard line and the receiver made a fair catch on the 25. The kicker for the receiving team came out and told me they wanted to free kick for a field goal.

So I had my crew line them up just like a kickoff to start the game at the 25. The rules are the receiving team has to be at least 10 yards away so they were lined up behind the 15. The kicker put the ball on a tee, stepped back and kicked a three-point field goal. Even I could make one like that with no one rushing.

Well, maybe. See you next week.

Herring registers tackles in Cactus Bowl Friday
Offensive player of the game, quarterback Wesley Beschorner (South Dakota), led the West squad to a record-breaking 49-28 win over the East squad in the seventh annual Cactus Bowl All-Star game Friday night at Javelina Stadium on the campus of Texas A&M-Kingsville.

The win by the West extended their series advantage to 8-4-1 in the all-time series of the Division II All-Star game. The West ended a streak of three East wins in the past four games in the annual bowl game, which features top senior players from NCAA Division II schools throughout the country. The game gives players a chance to display their talent before professional scouts.

The West led 33-7 at halftime.

Southern Arkansas Mulerider defensive linemen Chris Herring (tackle) and Chris Turner (end) both started for the East team. Herring finished with three tackles in the game, all solo, blocked an extra-point attempt, and was credited with the game’s only quarterback hurry. Turner added two solo tackles in the contest.

Herring, 6’0", 307-pounds, from Courtland, transferred to SAU from Ole Miss for his senior season. He ended the year with 40 tackles, 29 solo, 13.5 tackles for 58 yards in loss, 6.5 sacks for 37 yards in loss, two pass breakups, eight quarterback hurries, two forced fumbles, and one blocked kick. He led Southern Arkansas in tackles for loss, was fourth in the Gulf South Conference in tackles for loss per game (1.23), second on his team in sacks, and seventh in the GSC in sacks per game (0.59). He led the Muleriders in quarterback hurries, and was third on the team in total tackles.

Herring was named this year as a Third Team All-American, was both a Football Gazette and Daktronics Second Team All-Southeast Region selection, and was a First Team All-GSC pick.
