Proposal Would Remove Eligibility
Requirements for Hospital
Bidders

No minimum requirements – financial or otherwise – will be necessary in order to submit a purchase bid for Tri-Lakes Medical Center.
That’s if city aldermen go along with a decision made earlier this week by the Panola County Board of Supervisors.
The two boards will meet jointly at 9 a.m. on April 5 at the courthouse in Sardis to discuss the latest resolution.
The supervisor’s rapid discussion and changes to the hospital sale’s proposed resolution ended with 5-0 vote to proceed.
If the city agrees, the changes will be made to the resolution and packets sent out for requests for proposals (RFPs).
Attorney for the supervisors William McKenzie told the supervisors he had discussions with assistant city attorney Colmon Mitchell about sending out RFPs without the minimum requirements set forth in the resolution adopted by the Board of Aldermen.

Fire Detector Giveaway Set
to Start Soon

If you don’t have a working fire or smoke detector, members of the Batesville Fire Department will give you one.
Starting April 5, firefighters – in official clothing and driving fire trucks – will begin a door-to-door campaign aimed at making sure every home has a smoke detector, said Firefighter William Stewart.
As part of the department’s Fire and Life Safety Team, Stewart was one of those who traveled to Maryland last year to learn about successful programs under way in Hagerstown.
One of those, the fire safety trailer, has been implemented here to teach young school children fire safety. The smoke detector program is next on the list, Stewart said.
Mississippi ranks No. 1 in per capita fire deaths in the U.S. and, sadly, over the past couple of years Panola County has added names to the deadly toll.

Chocolate Fantasy Tickets

| Everyone is invited to The Batesville Friends of the Library Spring Chocolate Fantasy, Sunday, March 28 at the Batesville Public Library, from 1 p.m. until 3:30 p.m.
This year’s "Spring Chocolate Fantasy" will offer tables full of chocolate confectionaries and other delicious sweets, flowers, music, children’s art, and door prizes all with a taste of spring.
Tickets are $4 for a single ticket or 3 for $10 and may be purchased in advance from any Friends member, at the circulation desk at the Library or at the door on March 28.
Funds raised at the event will help cover the cost of the mural to be painted in the children’s reading area. A rendering of the mural, which is to be on display, features Mississippi birds and trees and scenes of other Batesville landmarks.
The Friends meet at the Batesville Public Library on the first Monday of each month at noon for a full hour of informative programs, book reviews, and a monthly business meeting. Brown bag lunches are welcome.
Membership is always open and as a special incentive, anyone who becomes a member of the Friends of the Library between now and March 28, will receive one free ticket to the Spring Chocolate Fantasy.

Talented Area Youngsters
Will Have Work on Display

Art students from schools throughout Panola County hope to paint the town red with a showing of their work at the Panola Partnership.
The showing is in recognition of National Youth Art Month and will take place on Tuesday, March 7, from 4-7 p.m. at the office of the Panola Partnership at 150-A Public Square.
The art show is a joint venture of the Batesville Main Street Association and the Batesville Women’s Club.
Participants for the show, one of the quarterly art showcases held by the Partnership, were chosen by art teachers from the North Panola School District, the South Panola School District and North Delta Schools.
"The art teachers from all of the various school throughout the area were responsible for selecting the artwork we will display during the showcase," Main Street Manager Colleen Clark said.
The students will receive no awards for their involvement, Clark said.

2004 Little Miss Batesville Pageant

 Shelby Rowsey, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Edward L. Rowsey III is contestant No. 4 in the upcoming Little Miss Batesville Pageant, "All Dolled Up" Sunday, April 4, 2004, 2 p.m., at Batesville Intermediate School Auditorium. The pageant is sponsored by Batesville Junior Women’s League.
Admission is $3 adults and $2 children.

Store Robbery Suspects Caught

It took law enforcement officers only about an hour to capture two suspects after a robbery at Friedman’s Jewelers in Tri-Lakes Village Shopping Center.
BPD Lt. Paul Shivers said a woman clerk at the store was showing a man some jewelry when he "snatched" three rings away from her and fled in a car driven by a second man. The incident happened about 11:11 a.m. Wednesday, the detective said.
"We put out information to area law enforcement agencies and they were caught by officers in Southaven," Shivers said. The rings weren’t recovered.
Charged with robbery were Andre Cabrere, 33, of Southaven, and Koalis Isby, 26, of Memphis, Shivers said. Both were in the Panola County Detention Center at press time.
Charges are pending against the pair for a similar crime Monday in Senatobia and Grenada authorities are investigating them in connection with a crime there, Shivers said.
Also Wednesday, Jeffrey Walton, 37, of Holly Springs, was arrested and charged with two counts of burglary and two counts of petit larceny in connection with break-ins earlier in the day, Shivers said.
Two businesses that sit next door on Highway 6 in Batesville, Powell’s Country Liquor and Buddy’s Truck Salvage, were burglarized, the detective said.
At press time, Walton remained in jail in Panola County.
