Tigers take over first place in district

South Panola now has a half-game lead over Tupelo in the Region 2-6A high school baseball standings after Tuesday’s 10-0 blanking of Columbus in five innings Tuesday at Columbus.

The teams will conclude their three-game series today at South Panola in a 4 p.m double header. The Tigers visit Grenada tomorrow at noon and 2 p.m.

The Tigers improved to 16-3 and 4-1 in district play.

Blaine Ware (4-1) gave up two hits with 10 strikeouts  while tossing the five-inning complete game victory for South Panola. Ware has given up one earned run and walked one batter in 37 innings pitched while lowering his earned run average to 0.18.

The Tigers led 3-0 before blowing the game open with five runs in the fourth inning on four hits. South Panola added two additional runs in the fifth for the final margin of victory.

Mari Boyd drove in three runs on two singles while Bowen Williams also collected three RBI with a two-run single and sacrifice fly. Brandon Phelps singled, doubled and scored two runs. South Panola had nine hits.

Dawson Griffin, Wes Morgan and John Culp delivered singles while Ware added a RBI double in the fourth inning. Blaine Cosby scored three runs in a courtesy running role.

John Blockmon scored a run in the fourth as a courtesy runner for catcher Braydyn Lee.
