Feb. 12

The Panola County Branch of the NAACP  invites current and new members to a meeting on Tuesday, Feb. 12, at the Batesville Public Library at 6 p.m.  Meetings will be held the Tuesday before the third Sunday of each month at the Batesville Library at 6 p.m. unless a change is announced. Pre-K registration for Batesville Elementary School will be held Feb. 15  from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the two-story red brick building on the BES campus at 110 College St. Children must be four years old on, or before, Sept. 1, 2019, to register. School officials said parents/guardians should bring the following items: certified birth cerfiticate, immunization Form 121, Social Security card, two proofs of 911 address, proof of child’s health insurance, and proof of family income for the year 2018 (tax return or W-2 form).

Feb. 21

First Security Bank will host Credit 101: Understanding Credit at Lambert City Hall, 831 Scott Avenue, Lambert at 5:30 p.m. Calvin Flint is the presenter. For more information, call 563-9311 ext. 1130. This event is free and open to the public.

The Hernando Public Library has announced the date for the Annual Soul Food Cooking Contest. This popular community event will be held on Thursday, Feb. 21, at 6 p.m. at the Hernando Public Library. While the food is being judged, there will be a program honoring Black History and soul food cooking, featuring local talent and special guest, Mississippi author Patricia Neely-Dorsey. Prizes will be given to the winners in each category. After the award ceremony, samples of the winning dishes will be available, while they last. Feb. 23

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and Volunteers for Waste Management would like to remind everyone of Enid Lake’s Annual Clean Up Day.  The event will be held on Saturday, Feb. 23 beginning at 7 a.m. Volunteers may meet at one of the following locations the morning of the event: Enid Lake Field Office, Bynum Boat Ramp, or Buford Road. All volunteers will be required to wear an approved Department of Transportation (DOT) helmet while operating ATV’s/UTV’s during Clean Up Day activities.  The staff at Enid Lake and the Volunteers for Waste Management would like to invite and encourage everyone to pitch in and help clean and maintain Enid Lake’s beauty.  Since conception in 2004, Enid Lake Volunteers for Waste Management’s Clean Up Day has been directly responsible for picking up over 938 compacted cubic yards of trash and debris, and removal of 815 tires from the shoreline and roadways of Enid Lake. The Grace Place Grand Opening is Tuesday, Feb. 26, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at its headquarters on 206 Pettit Street. Tours and refreshments included. (The Grace Place, Inc. is a Christian charitable organization, seeking to coordinate church and community efforts to meet physical, emotional, and spiritual needs in our community.)

First Security Bank will hold a Veterans Day of Awareness and Information from 4 to 6 p.m. at the First Security Bank Trust Dept., 275 Hwy. 6W, Batesville. Presenter is Dr. C.J. Feb. 28

South Panola Parent Center will present the workshop: Teachable Moments Making the Ordinary Extraordinary. Presenters are Melissa Readus and Tunga Otis, Family Engagement Specialist, Early Childhood Academy of Jackson. March 1

Entry forms are due March 1 for all age groups in the SpringFest Pageant that will be held March 30. Open to Mississippi residents from 6 months to age 18, the pageant winners in each division will be presented during the 21st annual SpringFest scheduled for May 17-18 on the Downtown Square.

March 14-16

The 10th annual Fit Camp 2019 returns March 14-16 (Thurs. – Sat.) from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.  and from 4 to 7:30 p.m. at the National Guard Armory on Keating Dr. The 5k starts at 9 a.m. on the 16th. Everyone is invited and encouraged to take part.

Ongoing Meetings

South pianola Class of 1979 is planning its 40th year reunion set for Oct 18-19, which is Homecoming Weekend at South Panola High School. Organizers are asking all class members to contact them at 934-7281 or 701-0171 for more information.

Panola County Alcoholics Anonymous meetings are held at Batesville First United Methodist Church at noon daily. For information call 234-8585.

Celebrate Recovery With Jesus will meet each Tuesday and Thursday evenings at 6:30 p.m. at Victory Independent Baptist Church on Hwy. 51S, two-and-a-half miles south of Batesville on the right. Bring all your hurts, habits, and hangups. Call 209-7773 for more information.

The Panola County Election Commissioners meet the first Tuesday of each month at the Batesville Courthouse at 2 p.m.

The American Legion meets the third Tuesday of every month at the VFW at 5:30 p.m.

The Panola County Humane Society meets the fourth Tuesday of every month at the Batesville Public Library at 5:30 p.m.

Panola County Cancer Relief Organization meets the second Tuesday of each month at the Batesville Public Library at 6 p.m.

Thursdays

Batesville VFW Post 4968 and Auxiliary meets the first Thursday of every month at the VFW building at 6 p.m

Fridays

Al-Anon support group for family and friends of alcoholics will meet at 7 p.m. at First United Methodist Church.
