Sheriff Report: Vehicle set on fire after serving as shooting target

A vehicle was shot up and set ablaze on Greg Taylor Road in Courtland Sunday, January 29.
According to the report by Deputy Josh Griffin, the resident reported someone shot her daughter’s Chevy and then set the car on fire.
The resident reported no one was staying at the residence at the time due to an incident that occured on January 15 where an unknown individual shot at the residence, according to the report.
“I observed three holes in the driver’s door of the vehicle that appeared to be bullet holes. I wasn’t able to get the VIN number or tag information due to the fire,” stated Deputy Griffin.
Lieutenant David Mills was notified of the incident. The investigation is ongoing.
Deputy Hunter Lawrence investigated another shooting incident where a Chickasaw Road, Pope resident reported noticing two bullet holes in her garage door on January 31. Again, no one was home when the shooting occured.
Harmonia Road resident reported a disturbance stating his ex-wife was drunk and causing the disturbance.
Upon arrival, Deputy Steven McLarty was met with cursing from the suspect who was sitting in a white Nissan.
After observing multiple opened alcoholic containers Deputy McLarty asked the suspect how much she’d had to drink and requested to see the suspect’s ID.
According to the report, the suspect continuously refused to comply. Deputy McLarty asked the suspect to get out of the vehicle to which she replied “no, I’m not getting out!”
According to the report, the suspect became combative as Deputy McLarty assisted her out of the vehicle.
The suspect was placed into custody and buckled into the back of Deputy McLarty’s police unit to be transported to the Panola County Jail.
According to the report, during transportation the suspect managed to get out of her seatbelt and began pulling out of the handcuffs.
“I gave loud verbal commands for her to stop and sit down. I observed the suspect pulling on the handcuff on her left wrist and and noticed blood coming from that area.”
“As I was looking for a safe area to stop my vehicle the suspect then attempted to climb into the front seat area. I gave several more loud verbal commands to stop and sit down, but she refused to comply.”
“I was unable to stop my vehicle. I applied a one second burst of O.C. Spray to the suspect’s face,” stated Deputy McLarty.
The suspect was given medical treatment from the jail nurse upon arrival.
Deputy McLarty investigated a report of theft from Backwoods Bar where two cell phones were reported missing. Deputy McLarty spoke to the suspect who handed over both phones. The phones were returned to their owners.
The Panola County Sheriff’s Office received 23 other reports from county residents requesting service from Sheriff Deputies.
January 28
• Deputy John Still investigated a domestic violence assault where the victim reported catching her husband having an affair.
According to the report, an argument ensued and the altercation became physical resulting in the victim suffering a cut to the face.
• Belmont Road, Sardis resident reported getting into an argument with an individual to Deputy Still.
According to the report, the next day the victim noticed someone had keyed her car in two places.
January 29
• Investigator Terry Smith responded to a family disturbance on Harris Road, Sardis. According to the report, two brothers were having a dispute over some dogs belonging to one of the individuals.
The resident reported his brother picked up a pipe and threatened him and his son. According to the report, the suspect stated he was upset because his brother threatened to shoot his dogs for spooking off the deer in the area.
The suspect decided to leave the residence to let things cool down.
• Investigator Smith responded to a fire at Plantation Estates on Highway 310, Como.
According to the report, the fire started in the northeast corner of the property.
The cause of the fire is still unknown at this time. The investigation is ongoing.
• Juanita Street, Sardis resident reported to Deputy Harold Lewis some items were stolen from his property on Bethlehem Road where he is currently building a house.
According to the report, various tools and appliances in the amount of $1,205 were stolen.
• Pocahontas Ext., Sardis resident reported to Deputy John Still he was out of town and returned home to find approximately $3,000 worth of property missing from his residence.
According to the report, tracks indicate the items were loaded onto a vehicle from the rear driveway.
• Dummy Line Road resident reported to Deputy Jeremy Hailey she kept her .380 pistol in her purse but it was no longer there.
The resident and Deputy Hailey searched the resident’s vehicle and both were unable to locate the pistol.
• Deputy Still spoke to a Horn Lake resident who reported her .22 caliber handgun was stolen from her Nissan Altima while she was visiting family in Batesville.
January 30
• Al Johnson Road resident reported to Deputy McLarty she and her boyfriend got into an argument and he pushed her down and then left.
The resident was advised to go to Justice Court if she wanted to file charges.
• Deputy Maurice Market was dispatched to BlackJack Road in reference to a suspicious vehicle.
According to the report, the victim stated she was driving on Black Jack Road and noticed she was being followed by a strange vehicle.
The victim stated she received a phone call from a friend warning her that her ex-husband was the one following her.
According to the report, the victim stated the suspect came up behind her vehicle at a high rate of speed causing her to run off the Road.
• Ballentine Road resident reported to Deputy Lawrence his .380 pistol was missing from his locked closet.
• Deputy Britton Crawford spoke to an individual who reported he was checking his trail cameras off Faulkner Road and saw a female jump the fence onto the private property, steal a Toyota truck emblem off of the gate and leave with it.
The individual stated he wants to press charges for trespassing and petit larceny.
January 31
• Lieutenant Emily Griffin responded to Camile Street, Sardis where the resident reported an individual arrived home to find a man attempting to get into her shed.
According to the report, the resident had several tools and items of clothing with him and consented to a search.
During the search, Lieutenant Griffin located a small green ziploc bag containing a green leafy substance.
The suspect was transported from the scene and issued two court summons.
February 1
• Fowler Road, Courtland resident reported to Deputy Still a repo man came to repossess her daughter’s car and while doing so damaged another vehicle in her driveway.
According to the report, the tracks near the vehicle coincided with the damage.
February 2
• Deputy John Still spoke to an idividual who reported speaking to the suspect on Facebook about buying a trailer. The individual met the suspect and paid $340 to the suspect for the trailer.
According to the report, the suspect left the scene after receiving the money and as the individual was hooking the trailer up the owner of the trailer pulled up.
The owner advised the trailer was his and not for sale. The incident is under further investigation.
• Kornegay Road resident reported to Investigator Danny Beavers she went to check on her four-wheeler and noticed it was missing.
The four-wheeler has been entered on the National Crime Information Center (NCIC).
• Captain Willie Harris spoke to a Henry Harris Road resident who stated she went outside to start her car to warm it up before heading to work and went back inside of her house.
According to the report, when the residenct came back outside she saw three subjects running from her yard across the Street into another yaRoad
The resident stated one of the subjects dropped a Little Caesar’s cap in her yard which was turned over to Captain Harris. According to the report, the resident was missing $130 from her vehicle.
• Deputy Josh Griffin responded to Eureka Road for a welfare check and after making sure everything was ok at the residence he returned to patrol. Deputy Griffin was advised the resident on Eureka Road was calling 911 and cursing the dispatcher, according to the report.
Deputy Griffin and Hailey responded to the residence where the resident was outside cursing. The resident was transported to the Panola County Jail and charged with abusive calls to an emergency telephone service.
• Liberty Hill Road, Courtland resident reported a known individual, who has been told not to come onto the property, continues to trespass onto her property.
• Henry Heafner Road resident reported to Deputy Hailey an individual was at her house drunk and falling down everywhere. The resident stated she just wanted to make a report that she was not supposed to be at her residence.
Motor Vehicle Accident Report
• January 27, a two cars accident occured on Shiloh Road causing one car to run into a ditch.
• January 29, vehicle hit a deer on State Park Road.
• February 2, car lost control on Pope Crowder Road.
