Sheriff investigating weekend thefts from homes, work sites

Residents of Panola County reported over $5,000 worth of stolen property during the May 6-9 weekend. The Panola County Sheriff’s Office received four reports of theft on May 6.
Deputy Dean Jones investigated one incident of grand larceny that occurred on Parks Place Road, Como where a resident reported two welding leads, a drill set and frozen food to be missing from his residence.
A Ramsey Trailer Park, Sardis resident reported to Lt. David Mills that someone stole approximately $560 worth of property from her home.
Deputy Jeremy Hailey took a report from an Atkins Street, Sardis resident who stated that someone stole a Playstation 4 and two games from the home.
Deputy Josh Griffin took a report from a Highway 315 North, Sardis resident who stated that someone stole the tag from his white Ford F150.
May 7, Deputy Mark Lott investigated a report of theft from a Sardis Lake Drive resident who reported that $2,650 worth of property was stolen from her home. Deputy Maurice Market took a report of theft from a Hope Lane resident who reported that his cell phone was stolen.
May 9, Deputy Rob Roberson  investigated an incident on Highway 6 West at the site of the new bridge construction. A worker at the site reported that someone stole a $600 steel cable from the construction site over the weekend.
Earlier reports include an April 19 family disturbance investigated by Deputy Lott, where a resident was intoxicated and throwing things in the home, hitting another resident. The resident was arrested and charged with family disturbance.
One report of petit larceny from May 1 was investigated by Detective Terry Smith who spoke to the Pope/Water Valley Road resident. The resident said that a .25 caliber semi-automatic pistol and a Toro weed eater were taken.
Detective Smith investigated another May 1 incident where a Hartzell Road house caught fire. The resident was having work done on the home. The fire is believed to have started from electrical wiring.
These incidents were among 32 reports to the Panola County Sheriff’s Office which required service from May 6 to May 12.
The incidents by date are as follow:
May 7
Pope/Crowder Road, Pope resident reported to Deputy Jones that the suspect from an earlier incident at The Place, where the suspect attempted to start a fight but was escorted out by an off-duty deputy, may have damaged the gate to his residence. The resident stated that the morning after the incident at The Place he left his home and noticed that it appeared as if someone rammed the gate with a vehicle.
Deputy Jones spoke to an Oak Grove Road, Sardis resident who stated that someone broke the driver’s side windows on his Honda Accord. The resident stated that she has been having problems with kids coming out of the skating rink next door and throwing rocks at her residence.
Henderson Road, Batesville resident reported to Deputy Harold Lewis that her ex-boyfriend broke a window out of her car after he couldn’t get into her residence.
Deputy Lott spoke to McNeely Road resident  who stated that he gave the suspect a large amount of money to keep for him until he needed it. According to the report, when the resident asked for the money back the suspect stated that she left the money outside her home for him to pick up. The resident stated that the money was not in its usual spot and that when he attempted to call the suspect she would not answer the phone.
May 8, Old Panola Road, Sardis resident reported to Deputy Lott that he found his neighbor’s dog dead in his yard while he was mowing grass. According to the report, the resident told his neighbor and that she got very upset and threatened to call the police if he didn’t bring her dog to her.
May 9
Lieutenant Kelvin Taylor spoke to a Highway 3, Crenshaw resident who reported that some individuals trespassed onto his property and threatened to kill another person.
Curtis Road, Batesville resident told Deputy Haley that someone broke into his shop through a hole they cut in the wall. According to the report, nothing was taken.
Eureka Road, Batesville resident told Lt. Harris that a red farm tractor was driving south on Eureka road with two vehicles behind it. According to the report, the tractor pulled over allowing the vehicles to pass and hit a utility pole causing several wires to be pulled out of the ground and broken. The resident stated that the tractor hit another pole near her home and that a man got off the tractor and attempted to untangle the wires. According to the report, the resident yelled at the suspect to stop and he ran back to the tractor and left.
Lt. David Mills spoke to a Highway 51 resident who reported that she and her girlfriend got into an argument and also stated that her girlfriend took her car without the resident’s permission.
Hartzell Road, Courtland resident reported to Detective Smith that a school bus was driving fast and forced him to move over into a ditch where he struck a piece of wood that damaged the passenger side fog light and rubber bumper on his truck.
May 10, Lt. Harris investigated a breaking and entering of a vehicle on Hadorn Road. The owner of the vehicle stated that he noticed the driver’s side window was shattered but that nothing was missing.
May 11
Deputy Jones took a report of attempted burglary from a Belmont Road, Sardis resident who said that an individual attempted to break in to her home but that he was scared off when she screamed. The suspect has attempted to break into the home before and that the resident has a restraining order against him.
Deputy Jones took another report of a disturbance from a Jones Road, Batesville resident who said that her boyfriend, who lives with her, was always drunk and acting crazy. The resident wanted to press charges on the suspect for assaulting her daughter, but was told that her daughter would have to file the charges since she was over the age of 21.
McKinney Road, Sardis resident reported to Lt. Chuck Tucker that he was receiving threatening text messages. The resident had some transmission parts and the suspect came to pick them up and was told what ever he didn’t take today would be thrown in the trash. The suspect left and came back the next day for the rest of the parts but was told that they had already been thrown out. The next day the suspect threatened the resident, stating that if the resident  doesn’t get the parts back the he is going to have problems.
Lt. Tucker received another report of harassment from a Rockhill Road resident who stated that an individual swerved at him with his car and then got out like he wanted to fight. According to the report, Lt. Edward Dickson then pulled up and stopped to see what was going on. Lt. Dickson told the resident to get a report of the incident.
Deputy Lott responded to a disturbance call from Sees Chapel Road where the suspect drove onto the property and ran over things and even attempted to run over her ex-boyfriend for not taking her back.
May 12
Lt. Tucker spoke to a Curtis/Locke Station Road resident who stated that she thinks her neighbor poisoned her dog. The resident stated that she is going to call the vet about getting the dog tested to find out how it died.
Lt. Tucker spoke to a Roberson Lane, Batesville resident who reported that an individual has been told multiple times not to come on the resident’s property. The suspect refused to comply requests from the resident and from and law enforcement officials to stay off of the property and was arrested and charged with trespassing.
Green Road, Pope resident reported to Deputy Jones that a dog keeps coming onto his property and chasing his dog. According to the report, the dog is known for attacking people. The resident stated that he would try to locate the dog’s owner.
Vehicle Accident Report
May 8, dog ran out in front of car causing an accident on Shiloh Road.
May 9, two cars collided on Lucious Taylor Road.
May 11, two cars collided on River Road.
No injuries were reported.
