Panola County is sponsoring a clean up day Saturday, April 30. Supervisors and administrators are looking for volunteers to sign up and take care of specific roads and locations.
Individuals, families, civic groups or church groups are all encouraged to chip in and lend a hand with picking up roadside litter.
County road crews and inmates will be used that day to assist with pickup and to haul away bags of garbage collected by citizens willing to help clean up their roads and areas.
Sheriff Dennis Darby said his department is down to one crew as the number of state inmates has been reduced limiting the number of persons that can be put on roadside trash detail.
Previously that department supplied two crews who went about the county picking up roadsides. That cutback is taking a toll as roadsides have become more littered than usual.
The event is being sponsored by Panola County and the Solid Waste Department that is also encouraging recycling waste materials and has containers located on Van Voris Street in Batesville for paper, plastic,  and cardboard.
The transfer station on McNeely Road in Courtland also has containers for rubbish, electronics and old tires.
People or organizations willing to assist with the clean or to claim a road or location to help beautifying up should call 563-6200 for more information. Trash bags will be provided.
