South Panola basketball ends regular season on high note

Both South Panola basketball teams closed out their regular season on a positive note by sweeping Senatobia in its home finale’ Tuesday night.
 In the varsity girls contest, senior Jasmine Wright poured in a game-high 21 points to lead the Lady Tigers to a 54-40 victory over the Warriors while in the nightcap, senior Jordan Smith scorched the nets for 30 points as the South Panola boys came away with a 61-57 triumph.

South Panola led from the opening tip off as Wright accounted for 11 of her 21 points in the first half. Sydney Morgan and Alexis Smith chipped in ten points apiece for the Lady Tigers who improved their record to 7-13 on the season.
  Freshman Marshala Doyle contributed nine points from her point guard position while Temaye Williams bombed a three pointer at the buzzer. Christy Hubbard finished out the scoring with one point. Senior Alexis Fondren got the first start of varsity high school career.
 Wright’s three pointer from the top of the key gave South Panola an 11-6 advantage early in the contest before Senatobia went on a mini 5-2 run to close out the quarter.
  South Panola began to pull away as they outscored Senatobia 11-4 in the second quarter to take a 24-15 lead at intermission. Smith’s basket off an assist from Doyle gave the Lady Tigers some breathing room at 17-12 with 4:41 left in the half. Morgan followed with the first of her three treys in the contest to expand the margin to 22-12.
 The Lady Tigers shot 20-of-51 (39 percent) from the floor while connecting on six three pointers and was 8-of-18 from the free throw line.
 South Panola extended its lead to 27-15 as the second half got underway when Morgan popped her second three-ball on the game. Senatobia made one final push by going on a 6-0 spurt to close the margin to 27-23 at the 5:08 mark of the third period.
 That would be as close as the Warriors would get however as the Tigers turned up the heat by outscoring the visitors 13-4 to take 40-27 cushion heading into the final quarter. South Panola led by as many as 19 points in the fourth period on back-to-back baskets from Doyle. 
 Destini Cathey led Senatobia with 19 points.

The South Panola boys evened their record at 8-8 in a game that was not decided until the final minute as Smith sank a pair of three throws with ten seconds remaining.
 Both teams exchanged leads four times in the final two minutes as the Warriors missed a layup with 34 seconds left that would have given them the lead. Smith’s layup gave the Tigers a 55-52 lead before Senatobia pulled within two at 59-57 on a pair of Tawaski Webb’s free throws with 13 seconds left to play.
 Smith, who was a perfect ten-of-ten from the charity stripe in the fourth quarter, knocked down two shots to ice the game with ten seconds remaining.
 The turning point of the game occurred at the 1:38 mark of the fourth when Senatobia was whistled for a technical foul. The Tigers preceded to hit three of four foul shots to take a 53-52 lead.
Senatobia outscored the Tigers 14-4 in the third period and led 43-36 heading into the final eight minutes before South Panola knotted the score at 46-46 with 3:30 left to play they then surged ahead 48-46 on Ketrell Key’s two free throws.
 Both clubs came out smoking in the first quarter as the Warriors grabbed a 18-17 advantage. South Panola connected on five treys in the second quarter as Smith burned the nets for three while Kenon Johnson bombed a long range jumper to give the Tigers its first lead at 23-22.
 Bobby Thomas followed Smith in scoring with eight points while Kendricus Carlton added six. Other scorers included: Johnson five points, Andre Gleaton three points, Key, Robert Hentz and Quen Poole had two points each and Josh Sims one point
