No-hitter thrown in SP summer league

Turner Rotenberry and Chase Durham combined on a five inning no-hitter as the South Panola baseball squad continued their Summer league session with a 3-1 victory over visiting Grenada Thursday night. Earlier in the day, the Tigers eased past Lafayette County 6-5.

 After Grenada scored its run in the third on a walk and two passed balls, South Panola put together three runs on three hits in the fourth that proved to be the winning margin.

 Back-to-back doubles by Cole Rotenberry and Durham in the bottom of the fourth tied the score at 1-1. Cosurety runner Brayden Locke later scored a pair of wild pitches to give South Panola a 2-1 advantage. The Tigers added a key insurance run when Kyle Weaver struck out but reached base on a passed ball. Then with two outs, Tripp Still stroked a single into left field to drive in Weaver.

The rest belonged to Rotenberry and Durham as the seniors to be shut down the Grenada offense with Rotenberry getting the starting nod on the mound, striking out two while walking one batter in three innings of work. Durham meanwhile fanned four of the eight batters he faced over the final two innings.

South Panola strung together six hits in the contest with Cole Rotenberry leading the way with a single and double. Turner Rotenberry,  Zach Hopper an still added singles. The Tigers left four runners on base while Grenada stranded five on the base paths including the bases loaded in the first.

 The Tigers scored three runs in both second and third innings to hold off the Commodores in five innings.

South Panola grabbed a 3-0 lead in the second when No. 9 hole hitter James Kyle Browning looped a two-out single into left to score Jacob Fennell and Locke. Browning later crossed the plate when Turner Rotenberry, who had earlier single was tagged out in rundown.

The Commodores quickly answered in the third with four runs on five hits to take a 4-3 advantage. The lead did not last long as South Panola regained the lead at 6-4 with three runs on three hits. Noah Willis got things started with a single followed by a Cole Rotenberry double to put runners on second and third.

South Panola then caught a break in the following at bat as Weaver’s popup was dropped by the second basemen thus allowing Willis to scamper home. Fennell then stroked a single to left that scored Rotenberry. Weaver accounted for the final Tiger run by scoring on a double steal of home.

The Commodores added a unearned run in the fifth and looked to possibly tie the game only to have Weaver make the defensive play of the game by nailing a runner at third base for the first out. With runners on first and second with two outs, reliever Luke Daniels recorded a fly out to center to earn the save.

Daniels threw two innings of relief, surrendering one run on three hits. Blaine Ware started on the hill and went three innings, fanning five on five hits and four runs. Neither hurler walked a batter.

Browning registered two singles while Cole Rotenberry added a single and double.
