Hendren Letter to Editor 8/12/2014

I am writing in response to Ms. Meda J. Arendale’s letter to the editor (August 1 Coverage Promotes Interest in Paganism) and a follow up letter to the editor from Ms. Jean Polk praising Ms. Arendale’s letter concerning a photo and caption that the Panolian ran in the July 22 edition covering Magnolia Grove Monastery’s open house.
Arendale’s letter said that the Panolian “will be held accountable for causing curiosity and interest,” and that “Foreign gods and paganism do not belong in our nation.” I would remind her that the first amendment establishes the right to free exercise of religion (not just hers) and of the press to cover it, if they so choose. By the way, I thought it was a nice photo.
I went to Magnolia Grove for the open house. I can only assume from their letters that neither Arendale nor Polk have ever been. The monks and nuns are neither pagans nor idol worshipers. They are Buddhists. They teach mindfulness, peace and compassion, and people of all faiths are welcome to come there and learn. I can’t fathom how a photo of a nun feeding fish with two children incited such vitriol.
I would suggest that anyone who doesn’t understand what transpires at Magnolia Village should pay them a visit. I find it hard to imagine that you will feel threatened by this group of men and women working to teach peace and understanding.
Ms. Arendale canceled her subscription because the Panolian was “causing curiosity and interest.” I just subscribed because I think that’s what a newspaper is supposed to do.
