John C. Broome III

BATESVILLE – John C. Broome III, 86, died Friday, July 5, 2013, at Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Mississippi.

Services were held Monday at First Baptist Church in Batesville. Dr. Tommy Snyder officiated. Burial was in Magnolia Cemetery. Wells Funeral Home had charge.

Broome, born Feb. 20, 1927, to Lucille Todd and John C. Broome, worked 36 years across the south and retiring in Batesville from Tennessee Gas Company as a manager.

He was a member of First Baptsit Church and served in the United States Army during World War II.

Survivors include: his wife, Betty Broome of Batesville; two sons, Barry Broome of Conway, Ark., Todd Broome of Frisco, Texas; one daughter, Barbara Broome Crew of Cleburne, Texas; three sisters, Louise Broome Thurman of Bowling Green, Ky., Nell Broome Baker of Batesville and Edna Broome Scott of Bartlett, Tenn.; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
The family requests that memorial donations be made to First Baptist Church, 104 Panola Ave., Batesville, Miss. 38606 or the Alzheimers Association, P.O. Box 96011, Washington, D.C. 20090-6011.

Lewis Charles Fortinberry

 
COURTLAND – Lewis Charles Fortinberry, 70, died Friday, July 5,  
 2013, at his residence in Courtland.

Memorial services will be held at the home of his neice, Tamara Adams Shedd in Batesville at 11 a.m. on Tuesday. Coleman Funeral Home has charge.

 Born in Earle, Ark., to the late Bernard L. and Agnes G. Fortinberry, lived in the area for the last 20 years where he had worked as a contractor. He was a Baptist.

Survivors include one daughter, Nikki Fortinberry of Gibson City, Ill.; two sons, Richard Fortinberry of Biloxi, and Jerry Fortinberry of Gibson City, Ill.; three sisters, Ruby Fortinberry Roberson and Ethel Fortinberry Alewine, both of Courtland, and Esther Fortinberry Taylor of Oran, Mo.; three brothers, Leonard Fortinberry of Sanford, Mich.; James Fortinberry of Orlando, Fla. and Loland Fortinberry of Lambertville, Mich.

Memorials may be made to the charity of the giver’s choice.

 Mittylene “Mitzi” White Goodwin

MEMPHIS – Mittylene “Mitzi” White Goodwin, 79, died Sunday, July 7, 2013.

 Services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at Dickins Funeral Home in Batesville. Visitation will be held Wednesday 4:30 p.m. – 7 p.m. at Dickins Funeral Home. Burial will be in Chapel Hill Cemetery.

Goodwin, born Sept. 9, 1933, to the late Homer Arvil White and Myrtle Mae Helms White, was a member of Bolton Full Gospel Church where she  sang in the choir.

Survivors include: daughters, Patricia Lynn Younger of Lorton, Va. and Teresa Ann Scensy of Holladay, Tenn.; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
 

 Calvin Lee Jones Sr.

 BATESVILLE – Calvin Lee Jones Sr., 40, died Thursday, July 4, 2013.

Services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at Batesville Junior High Auditorium. Rev. Zannie Leland will officiate. Burial will be in  Macedonia Church Cemetery.

Visitation will be held Friday 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. at  Cooley’s Mortuary. Cooley’s Mortuary has charge.

Jones, born May 3, 1973, in Batesville, to Claudie Mae Valentine of Batesville and the late Leroy Jones Valentine, graduated from South Panola High School. He was a school bus driver for the South Panola School District and a member of Shady Grove M.B. Church.

He was a member of Panola Riders Motorcyle Club and was a Mason in Crowder 6-A Lodge.

Survivors, along with his mother include: sons, Calvin Jones Jr., Jaylon Porter, Draylon Baker and De’Mario Jones, all of Batesville, Dae John Harrell and Caldree Kious Harrell, both of Helena, Ark.; two daughters, Destiny Harrell  of Helena, Ark. and Tierra Jones of Batesville; seven brothers, Leroy  Jones and John Jones, both of Sardis, Bobby Jones, Wallace Valentine, J.W.  Jones, Rick Jones and Robert Jones Jr., all of Batesville; seven sisters, Ella Owens,Mattie Jones, Dorothy Jones, Rosie Jones, Doll Jones and Eloise Robertson, all of Batesville and Glory Hickenbottom of Oxford and three grandchildren.

 
 Douglas McArthur Ellis Jr.

 BATESVILLE – Douglas McArthur Ellis Jr., 35, died Thursday, July 4,  
 2013.

Services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Goodhope M.B. Church in Batesville. Pastor Darrell Ellis will officiate. Visitation will be held 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. on Friday at Cooley’s Mortuary. Cooley’s Mortuary has charge.

Ellis, born Oct. 11, 1977, in Batesville, to Douglas McArthur Ellis and Emma Carr, graduated from South Panola High School. He was a member of St. Peters M.B. Church.

Survivors include: his mother, Emma Carr of Batesville; wife, Janie Ellis of Sardis; four daughters, Alisha Lee, Yonna Lee, Alisha Tutor, all of Batesville, Stormy Williams of Sardis; six brothers, Patrick Thomas and Donnell Williams and James Wright, all of Batesville, Gary Ellis of Courtland and Doug Diggs of Marquette, Mich. and two sisters, Teresa Ellis of Sardis and Patricia Diggs of Marquette, Mich.


 Tyronda Lashon Porter

 COURTLAND – Tyronda Lashon Porter, 33, died Wednesday, July 3,  
 2013, at her residence in Courtland.

 Services will be held at 1p.m. on Friday, July 12, at Batesville Intermediate School Auditorium. Rev. Edwin Smith will officiate.
 
Visitation is noon – 5:30 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be in  
Shiloh Cemetery. Kenneth I Roberson Funeral Home of Sardis has charge of the
arrangements.

She was the daughter of Willie Benson and Charlene Porter, both of Courtland. She was a member of New Freedom Family Ministries in Oxford where she served on the kitchen committee and with the Outreach Ministry.  She loved skating and yard sales.

Survivors in addition to her parents include: two sons, Drelan Porter and Jaylon Porter both of Courtland; five sisters, Latisha Bibbs, LaShonda Porter, and Janet Porter all of Batesville; Patricia Porter of Milwaukee,Wis., and Darlene Porter of Courtland; and one brother, Willie Earl  
Porter of Courtland.

 Leo Miller

 BATESVILLE – Leo Miller, 71, died Thursday, July 4, 2013.

Services will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at Batesville Junior High Auditorium in Batesville.

Rev. Zannie Leland will officiate. Visitation will  be held Thursday 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. at Cooley’s Mortuary and Friday 10 a.m. –  11 a.m. at Batesville Junior High Auditorium. Burial will be in Macedonia Cemetery. Cooley’s Mortuary has charge.

Miller, born Sept. 19, 1941, in Biloxi, to the late Harriet Bradford and Clifton Miller, graduated from Rust College. He was a retired  school teacher from South Panola High School. He was a member of Macedonia M.B. Church. He was a member of Mississippi Association of Educators, SPAE, NEA and Rust College Alumni.

Survivors include: his wife, Cathey Miller; daughters, Patrice Miller, Karen D. Rudd, all of Batesville; one son, Michael Rudd of Batesville; three brothers, Isadore Miller of Houston, Texas, Earl Miller of Denver and Leon Miller of Cordova and six grandchildren.
