Clyde Henry Brunt


SARDIS – Clyde Henry Brunt, 84, died Tuesday, May 8, 2012, at Baptist Memorial Hospital-DeSoto.

Services will be held this Saturday at 2 p.m. at Mt. Zion M.B. Church. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery. Felix Cauthen Funeral Home has charge.

He worked for Ford Motor Company as a mechanic.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Carrie Bell Brunt and his son, Rufus Brassell.

Survivors include: one daughter, Betty J. Salter of Sardis; three sisters, Shirley Brunt Evans and Vivan Brunt Harris, both of Memphis and Willie May Avant of Independence; one brother, Jimmy Brunt of Como; eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Ben Allen Chambers Jr.


BATESVILLE – Ben Allen Chambers, Jr., 28, died Monday afternoon, May 7, 2012, folowing an auto accident on Hwy. 35 in Panola County.

Services were held Thursday at Wells Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Jimmy Ayers and Sister Willie Beardain officiating. Interment wa in Chapel Hill Cemetery, Pope.  Wells Funeral Home had charge of arrangements.

Chambers was born in Charleston, on August 9, 1983 to Shelia A. Parker and Ben Allen Chambers Sr. He was a mechanic by trade. He was Church of Christ by faith.

Survivors include: his mother, Shelia A. McNutt of Greenville; his father, Ben A. Chambers Sr., of Courtland; one daughter, Kadie Ann Chambers of Greenville; two sons, Ben Allen Chambers III and Kamron Dulane Chambers, both of Greenville; his fiance’, Danielle Mixon of Crowder; three sisters, Ashley Nichole Chambers of Indianola, Jessica Lane Chambers and Anabelle Grace Chambers, both of Courtland; his grandparents, Willie and Keith Beardain of Charleston and Barbara Parker and A.C. Parker of Greenville; his stepfather, Michael McNutt of Greenville; his stepmother, Debbie Chambers of Courtland; and stepmother, Lisa Chambers of Courtland; one stepsister, Amanda D. Prince of El Paso, Texas; three stepbrothers, Christopher L. Hudson and Steven McClenic, both of Courtland and Brandon McClenic of Batesville.


Janie Johnson


BATESVILLE – Janie Johnson, 90, died Monday, May 7, 2012, at Golden Living Center in Batesville.

Services will be held Friday, May 11, at 2 p.m. at Cooley’s Mortuary with burial in West Camp Cemetery in Batesville.  Pastor Larry Key will officiate. Visitation will be held Friday from 1 p.m. – 2 p.m. at Cooley’s Mortuary. Cooley’s Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

Johnson was born January 16, 1922 in Batesville, to Arthur Johnson and Freddie Charmus Hentz Johnson. She was a homemaker and member of Liberty Hill M.B. Church in Batesville.

Survivors include her daughter, Betty Reed of Batesville; one granddaughter, Muszelda Hoskins of Batesville; one nephew, Lonnie Johnson of Milwaukee, and three great-grandchildren, Shardae Hoskins, Alliah Hoskins and Denzel Hoskins, all of Batesville.


Willie Thomas Matthews


BATESVILLE – Willie Thomas Matthews, 81, formerly of Benton, died Tuesday, May 8, 2012, at his home.

Services will be held Sunday at 2:30 p.m. at Mt. Zion C.M.E. Church in Benton. Rev. Roosevelt Gage will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery. J.F. Brittenum and Son Funeral Home has charge.

He was a member of Mt. Zion CME Church in Benton and a member of the Masonic Lodge and was a church trustee.

He was preceded in death by two sons, Benjamin F. Matthews and Willie Thomas Matthews Jr.

Survivors include: his wife, Sarah Kuykendoll Matthews of Batesville; one daughter, Chyleen M. Gage of Okolona; three step-daughters, Joan Johnson, Elizabeth Jones and April Chapman, all of Batesville; one step-son, Eric Chapman of Batesville; one brother, Jerry Elliott of Ashland; six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Alex Broome Shields


POPE – Alex Broome Shields, 25, died Wednesday, May 9, 2012, in Memphis.

Services will be held Saturday, May 12 at 11 a.m. at First United Methodist Church in Batesville. Burial will be in Forrest Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be held Friday from 5 p.m. – 8 p.m. at Wells Funeral Home. Wells Funeral Home has charge.

Alex was born to Annette Broome and Gene Shields on Jan. 22, 1987, in Greenville. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church and worked as a clerk at the UPS Store and also at the UPS shipping center in Batesville.

Survivors include: her son, Bryson Garrett Allen of Pope; three sisters, Cassidy Shields Logan of Batesville; Scarlett Shields Robison of Batesville and Brittany Shields McCullar of Rogers, Ark.; two brothers, Heath Shields of Marion, Ark. and Brandon McMinn of Gulfport; her father, Gene Shields of Batesville; her mother, Annette Broome Demaidi of Batesville; grandparents, Howard Shields of Batesville, Dr. and Mrs. Carlock Broome of Pope and Mr. and Mrs. Richard Patton of Oxford.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in her memory for her son, Bryson, at Covenant Bank, P.O. Box 1627, Batesville, Miss. 38606.

Elsie Joan Lee


TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Elsie Joan “Jo” Lee, 79, died Thursday, May 3, 2012, at her daughter’s residence.

Services were held Thursday at Jennings Chapel Rose Garden. Rev. Judy Shepard officiated. Sunset Funeral Home had charge.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Loraine and Rodney Waldrup, of Batesville.
Survivors include: one daughter, Wendy Renee Fourt; two step daughters, Carole Ann French of Jonesboro and Robbie Donaldson Ryals of Atlanta; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the American Cancer Society.

Asie Lee Moody Vaughn


COMO – Asie Lee Moody Vaughn, 92, died Sunday, May 6, 2012, at her residence in Sardis.

She was a native of Como and the widow of Willie Vaughn. She was a member of Cistern Hill MB Church where she served as an usher, pastor’s aide club and the October Club, She was a member of Bright Light Chapter #197 of the Order of the Eastern Star.

 Services will be 12:00 Noon Saturday, May 12, 2012, at Cistern Hill MB Church in Como. Rev. Cedric Richardson will officiate. Burial will be in Cistern Hill Cemetery. Kenneth I. Roberson Funeral Home of Sardis is in charge of the arrangements.

She is survived by one sister – Daisy Evans of Coldwater; and two brothers – Percy Moody, Jr. of Youngstown, OH and Walter Moody of Meadville, PA.

Visitation will be 11:00 Am to 11:55 AM at the church on Saturday only.

Dianna Cresswell Webb

HARMONTOWN – Dianna Cresswell Webb, 52, died Tuesday, May 8, 2012, at her residence.

Services will be held Friday at 3 p.m. at New Hope Baptist Church in Harmontown. Burial will be in New Hope Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 1 p.m. until service time at the church. Ray-Nowell Funeral Home has charge.

Webb was a member of New Hope Baptist Church and a former EMT with Harmontown Fire Department.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Gerald Wayne “Jerry” Webb Jr.

Survivors include: two daughters, Beverly Babb and Ashley Webb, both of Oxford; three sons, Jason Cresswell of Johnson City, Tenn., Jeremy Cresswell of Hernando and Shawn Webb of Oxford; two sisters, Denise Blaylock of Harmontown and Michelle Wallace of Southaven; one brother, Mike Cresswell of Memphis; eight grandchildren.
